The registration is a brand new thing.

Also, I think it's more than just registration. My school just banned the use of rc aircraft until they can create policies to regulate use. I've heard this is happening on other campuses.

i know, my point was there will be zero enforcement.
ie a FAA agent will never come to the flying feild to check for registration numbers in/on planes, and pilot registration.

This is just more government knee jerk reaction to a non-existent problem. However, I don't think this is aimed at AMA members who fly traditional rc planes at AMA fields. Technically, a traditional rc plane is a drone (unmanned), but they don't get lumped into uav/drones by the majority.

People have flipped their lids over the "scary" multirotor "drones" with cameras and such. I mention traditional rc planes around most people and they think they are cool. Some of the same people tell me that they will shoot those "spy drones" out of the sky if they fly over their property.

I think it's a terrible idea. Government needs to worry about ISIS.

I did a little reading and it looks like they are lumping all air rc into this. .55 to 55 pounds will have to be registered. It is $5 for three years. Who knows when that fee will go up.

We can't trust people with these "dangerouse" objects!

We need the government to protect us from bad people who might use these potentially deadly devises to do harm.

That is correct. It also includes rc aircraft .55 to 55 lbs that are controlled by tether (line). Just failing to register your drone is a federal crime.

From the FAA Q&A for drone registration.
Q: What is the penalty for failing to register? A: Failure to register an aircraft may result in regulatory and criminal sanctions. The FAA may assess civil penalties up to $27,500. Criminal penalties include fines of up to $250,000 and/or imprisonment for up to three years.

UAS Registration Q&A

This looks to be the end game (From the FAA no drone toolkit):

I think it's more than a knee jerk reaction. When firefighters can't fly because of other aviators in the area, then that's a problem.

add this to a knee jerk reason too.

Federal prisons seek methods to shut down contraband-toting drones

But Im with Stang Killa ...... its not something I see them overly enforcing unless people complain.

What if you use numerous .5lb and less drones that act as a swarm. Does that count as 50 individuals thus no need to register? You can laugh, but this technology already exists. The only question is when it will become mainstream.

The enforcement won't come from the authorities it will come from your club.

The guys at my club don't lecture me because they really think I endanger THEM (at least I don't think I fly that badly) it's because if there is an accident it jeopardizes the club itself and they don't want to lose that.

Same thing- they will make us show proof of registration along with the AMA card- just like they make us put our personal info on the plane.

I can see where you are coming from. We don't want idiots out there doing illegal or unsafe flying. I just disagree with the method.

My point is, why make AMA members, who have flown safely for decades, register? AMA members typically fly at sanctioned flying fields or personal property and they fly within AMA rules. That's why I consider this a "knee jerk" reaction.

It's like anything else. The outlaws won't register or follow any common sense/rules. Only the AMA members will register and they are all following the rules anyway. I'm all for laws and penalties that will curtail stupidity. If people are caught flying rc "drones" illegally, throw the book at them. Leave the rest of us alone.

I see a lot of parallels with gun control, here. Mostly, people freaking out over something that can actually help them, if they just understood it better.

Hell the P.O.S. Air Hog X-Wing being sold a walmart would need to be registered according to this.

Wonder how they are going to pay for tracking all this crap.

EDIT:

At least is $5 a pilot, not aircraft. That could get dam expensive for some people I know.

Q. If I own multiple drones, do I have to register them all?
A. No. You may register once and apply the same registration number to all your UAS.

Not to mention it's $5.00 for a 3 year license. Dad said it reminded him of when the FCC required people to be licensed to operate a CB radio back in the 70's. Only had to license the operator and it was a inexpensive sign up fee, although I think there was some paperwork to go with it.
