Lightbulb Need a long driveshaft.

Hey guys, I need some help.

I'm building a custom 4wd trophy truck and the stock shaft for the front diff is to long. If it has a slip or a solid shaft, either way I don't care.

Distance from output of trans to front diff is about 6.875.

Thank!

Why not just make your own? Not that hard to do. Or go to the MIP site and pick one the length you need.

Now I'm somewhat confused on what you mean, does MIP make custom shafts? or am I missing something?

I don't know about that, but I figured they'd have a way to just search by lengths, but apparently not. Perhaps shoot them an email and see what they can do. Or, maybe try this?

Punisher Shaft II (150mm - 192mm / 5.90" - 7.55") 5mm Hole

Doubt they do but that would shave love a lot of my 1/6 scale build problems. Longest MIP I know of is 5.87 for the Yeti.

You need a 175mm DS assuming that a collapsed number but what are the input and outputs? Depending on that there are a lot of 1/8 choices.

5.87 isn't long enough, length would be about 6.875

I know. The pic was just a reference for MIP lengths that are available.

So, to help we need your input and output types. Depending on those you might get luck or have to piece something together.

Front diff is a standard traxxas 4wd (pic bellow
Transmission is a axial scx10

the only problem with that is i'm running 2 different output shafts, 1 Traxxas 1 Scx

That shaft wouldn't be a problem as round is round. I know the traxxas has flat spots but it is round nonetheless. As long as it is 5mm like the start CL SCX then your fine.

Now that we know it is IFS, how much kick up in the front do you have? Is the output on the SCX directly in line with the traxxas or is the traxxas up or down a few mm pointed down or up?

Since it is IFS you don't need a telescoping DS just one that is long enough. When I get to my home PC I'll shoot you a few options.

Note this, the traxxas shaft is a couple millimeters bigger.

The traxxas is up a few millimeters right now, as the build continues in going to build a little spacer to raise the trans up.

A couple of mm is a massive difference. Is is 5mm, 6mm, 7mm, 8mm? What is it out of?

Keeping things as cheap as possible on a custom build If it were me i would go with Option 1

Option 1:
Buy these https://www.dollarhobbyz.com/product...nt=43199088909
Take one DS and take of the Axle stub. Take a 2nd DS and take off the Hub. Put the Hub on Axle #1. You now have a DS Extended to 175mm pin to pin and you still have 10mm of shaft engagment. Not a whole lot but you aren't going to run 6s so should be fine up to 4S. If it blows up then take axle #2 and cut the male shaft off. Get a set screw and combine Axle #1 male shaft and Axle #2 shaft. Then the DS will be John Holmes long if you get me.

Option 2: Assuming you can shim the SCX Trans up to be inline with the Front Diff output.

Get (2) of these
https://www.dollarhobbyz.com/product...rive-hub-6888x

Then cut this to length leaving 5mm on both ends for a little play.
https://www.dollarhobbyz.com/product...sh-4x4-st6855b

Option 3 (kinda lame but works)
Dog bone outputs with a Dog bone.

This is the DS in Option 1. Plenty of clearance to the chassis. Yes it is on a Wraith Trans but same as the AX/SCX output wise. It is actually a SuperShafty but his are just pieced together ERevo's if i remember correctly.

All i got for now.

I believe it's 7-8 mm. Front diff is out of Slash 4x4.

I'll look into it a little more, I don't get t much right now but i'll let you know!

Thanks!

Bearings for the Diff output on the Slash are 6x12x4mm. So, the Traxxas shafts will work on both ends. To take up the 1mm on the SCX side just wrap it in alum tape. You won't see slop until you run big power or are super dirty environment.

2s and a 3520kv motor would be fine wouldn't you think?

I would look into an uni shaft and output cups for the center shaft. You can find them longer then standard slip driveshafts. Also, do you have a drill, 6mm drill bit and vise? That way you can drill out one output cup for the traxxas side.

I've definitely got a drill, not sure about he bit. Can you explain what shaft you're talking about?

What's happening here? Not one "long shaft" joke, yet?
