I was a server for a long time at the fresh fish company, being one who used to live on tips, this is how I do it when Im out and about.

tips start the meal at 50%.
every time I get angry at the server they loose 10%
every time they don't know I need water, before I know I need it, -10%
so if the server is real good, they get half the tab, but that has never happened, in fact, I don't think they have ever earned over 30% of the tab

the way that i see it is if they are nice and come back to check on you and your food atleast three times while you have your meal and they pass the drink test like stated above then i tip big. but you always have your exceptions. me and my girl had a waitress one night at Outback that seemed to just be having a sh!tty day, got yelled at by the manager twice for who knows what. i felt bad for her, the bill was like $45 and i gave her $80 and told her to it was all set. she never gave us any problems so i figured what the he!! she deserves it. and it totally made her day. but if the service sucks and the waiter/waitress is in the back BSing rather than checkin in then screw em

we dont have tax here, but Ive tipped large for really good service, like 100% but Ive also walked out of restraunts before too, like the time I went to applebee's with a buddy of mine, we were seated and brought our drinks, then sat there for about 20 minutes, by this time we stayed just to see how long it would take, we wound up staying for hour and a half before the waitress asked if we wanted a refill, never mind we didnt even have menus yet

Here's one for you guys...

I'm at a resturant now...found out that my waitress has left for the day.

Should I leave a tip, knowing that someone else will get it...or not leave a tip and catch up with her next time?

I've always tipped ~20%, unless the service was terrible. Note, bad food isn't the fault of the server...and great food still can't make up for a terrible server.

I also do a lot of business entertainment and I was recently informed that my employer won't reimburse anything over 15%. I still try and tip 20% whenever it's deserved.

On a related note, what do you tip for your haircut? Mine costs $13 and I tip $5.

The pizza delivery guy?? Our guy is GREAT!! He was so thoughtful a few yrs ago, he knew we had an infant son so he added a note to the computer that said, "don't ring doorbell, knock softly on front door". He's either very thoughtful or we eat way too much pizza

Note, we never mentioned anything about sleeping children, he came up with that on his own. That's why he gets $5 for our $11 or $12 pizza. Sadly great service is unique these days. Nowadays our son is 3 and can chow down several pieces of pizza on his own!!

In cases like that I've been known to walk up to the kitchen and hand a $5 to the cook
