For years I was a diehard fan of a 270/08 my father had made some years ago. Of course, making brass for it, etc. is really a pain. The 270 winmag is the solution to that, and I've been using that for the last couple of years. Of course, where I'm living now, I don't get many shots farther out than 150 yards, which is about as short a shot as I can make with that rifle (I need a lot of time to shoot through a scope) which has prompted me to pick up a 45/70, which I'm leaving open sights on for these shorter shots.

what are you guys hunting? I hunt mule deer mainly, I have used a 30.06, a 300 min mag, and my most recent purchase is a 7mm winchester short mag. although all have been excellent hunting rifles and I have bagged many deer with each, I shot my first deer last year with the 7mm wsm and have to say it is my favorite so far! my dad recently bought a .50 BMG and we got two doe permits this year so I am pretty excited to go hunt with it this fall also! |

well i mainley go for white tail's around here so .270 is a good cal for that also 30.30 is my brush gun , most of the time i am not taking shots over 80 yards when on the ground , but up in my stands i could be shooting over 300 , i have not taking a shot that far yet i dont know if i wanna try or not, i was gonna get a 30.06 but a .270 shoots flatter that a 30.06 so i went with a .270 instead

you should definately try some long shots! those are my favorite, we take a range finder and pick an object out on a mountain and find how far it is and then we elevate and shoot to see what kind of adjustments need to be made. it's a blast! in fact the first deer I ever shot was on a run at about 300-350 yards. I still can't believe I hit it to this day. buck fever really screws you up on your first shot! |

I've always (and still am) a .308 fan, but I scored a good deal on a 7mmWSM and love it. I took a Mulie last year in WY with it at 506 yrds. Now I have a new "love". It is the new standing group record, and the longest shot I've taken on a animal in a while. Most of my shots here on whitetail average about 300. But I've shot a lot of distance stuff in the service though, so 3-6 is kind of a chip shot....when they stand still that is |

I was raised hunting in Ca with a 270, I like the 308's for reloading. As long as I don't have to hunt deer with a shotgun (slug) I am cool!

No rifles? That sucks! I bet there are some people there that would be great shots with rifles! As far as fav. gun, it would have to be the Remington 700 ADL, in synthetic, with the checkered bolt. I know the checkering won't do anything, but it looks cool. As far as caliber, I like the .270, not too much recoil, but it is a great caliber for whitetails, pigs, etc. At about 300 Yds. (I think) the 30-30 drops about 30 inches, where the .270, and 30-06 only drop around 10. Buckshot in a 12-Ga. is pretty fun, too. I shot somebody's 300 ultra mag the other day at the range, and it has a good amount of recoil. The owner was about average-build, and it was rocking him in the chair. That day, I also shot a 30-06 for the first time, and it was pretty sweet. The .270 and the 30-06 are very similar, in terms of ballistics. The .270 is actually a modified 30-06 that has been necked-down to accept a smaller bullet.

I used to hunt with my trusty 30-30, bring down just about anything. I have recently switched to bowhunting and I am havin way more fun. Nothin better than takin a shot from 20 to 30 yrds out as compared to 100 or farther.
