If the light turns green, and if I time it right, the cars take off, and I go right along. This way, I don't use even more fuel taking off from a standstill, which is when cars use a lot more. I save gas, and wear on brake disks/pads. Anybody have any other ideas/tips to share?

I put in a larger fuel tank so now I get better mileage.

Here are some proven ways

#1 and most effective, buy supreme octane Gas,

Change oil every 3,000 miles and use 5w30 conventional oil, unless you have diesel of course

Cold air type air filter

Keep good spark plugs up to date (every 30,000)

Fuel filter (every 9,000)

Have your catalytic converter checked or replaced.

Keep good wide range o2 sensors when needed

Don't let any emission codes go unfixed

i took the bulb out for code indication.

Not sure how many of you drive a manual , but shifting early in the RPM range tends to help me alot.

I shift at or before 2K every shift and get 24-26 MPG in Bumper to Bumper traffic.
Thats in a 6Spd Vette , Im sure the 6 Spd helps some with the MPG

Diesel is almost 4 a gallon here in the bay. I rarely ever drive the truck anymore unless its really needed.

i got a dodge neon from my ladies co worker for free last month. put 300 into it and it runs like a champ.....10 gallon tank lasts me about 2-2.5 weeks ....so its in the 19-22 range around town. When its not raining im on the supermoto.....depending on where and how im riding im getting like 35-45 mpg out of it.

Great. Good for you.

I bet you also pretend you've got an egg under your foot when you leave a light and take 10 minutes to get back up to the speed limit too?

A good number of people drive like that around here in Northern VA, and it just makes bad traffic even worse. Like you're really saving a significant amount of gas? C'mon, think about it.

The same people I see driving this way on the daily also have one or more tires that are obviously not at proper pressure, and I'd bet they also have dirty air filters and worn out ignition parts, too. Jackasses...

Traffic is bad enough as it is. Let's all stay on the throttle when nessecary and keep the flow going, ok?

I guess this is sort of a no brainer, but If you downshift when you are slowing down instead of just applying the breaks, you can save fuel mileage and break pad wear, My car has a MPG display that is always moving and when I use the engine break (let the engine rev in a low gear) to slow down I get better mileage than when I have the clutch in while stopping. You can do this in automatics too, just pull the shifter down into 3rd, 2nd, and so on until you are almost stopped. Works pretty good for me, stopping and on hills.

I would love to get a diesel and do a greasecar.com conversion. According to a show I was watching in HD about alternative fuels they say the averae engine can be converted to run on E85 or E100 for $100 in parts and a remap of the computer. Now if the US would pull its head out of it's ass and go full bore on corn booze. It will never happen as long as we have a president with oil industry ties.

Not to argue, but I live in the corn capital of the country. Needless to say, Mn is also a leading ethanol producer. There's ethanol plants popping up all over, but many so called "experts", say when the gov subsidies end, many will close. If it wasn't for gov subsidies, it wouldn't be a profitable industry. Ethanol costs more per gallon to produce, and also burns much less efficient then gas.
It's great that it helps the farmers get a decent price for their crop, however, it will have an effect on our food prices, as more and more corn goes into ethanol production. I doubt it's the answer to our energy independence. I would bank on the hybrid for the near future.
My brothers butt ugly Prius (sp) averages 53mpg.

I think the reason is that there are too many cars on the road from road works etc, TopGear worked out tha as sson as there is a place where there is a blockage, to keep all traffic moving then everybody should speed up to 175mph. So that's what I think we should all do!

It's my belief that the real "answer" to the fuel supply thing is fuel cells. At least right now I think it is, maybe something new will pop up that I've never heard of. All that needs to happen is the price of a fuel cell car to come down to rival gas and diesel.

Wow. Those big Yank V8's get some crappy mileage. We get 15mpg from the old landy, with a very agricultural engine, the aerodynamics of a brick, and being driven 'unsympathetically'. Oh, and our petrol is up to a quid a litre (bout $10 a gallon).

I agree with you. The E85 burns at 80% of what petrol does. They are producing E100 that runs about 110 octane and should be a better fit.

I would still like to do the conversion to a diesel.
