servos - metal or Ti gears?

Both are excellent servos and you can go wrong with either one

The only differences I have heard about is the 8711 seems to not squeek as much as the 5955 (less of an issue with the 7955, or so I read) and the 8711 is $140.

IMHO, I prefer the HiTECH servos, the TG gears stay tighter and don't wear like the metal gears do. Also in the new generation HS-7955TG, even under extreme stress and excess heat they won't lose any torque.

Also, although NOT RECOMMENDED, the new HS-7955TG will handle an unregulated 2S Li-po battery. This will cause the motor to wear out quicker but the electronics inside won't cook. Plus with the new overload circuit you can fine tune it, as long as you have access to a programmer. Also, since they have discontinued the HS-5995TG robot servo, I can tell you that the new servos will also continue to ramp the torque as more votage is applied. i.e. the HS-7955TG will be over 417 oz at 7.2V.

Btw, the older HS-5955TG and the HS-5995TG robot servo are the EXACT same, only differences are the case of the 5995 has a threaded mount point and the 5955 was limited to 90^ of movement, but it too will increase to 417 oz at 7.2V, the only issue, which is fixed in the 7955, is that as the servo heats up, it will actually lose some torque.

That's good to hear since I have a spankin' new 7955TG sitting in front of me now.

I have a part no. for a PC based programmer in my 7955 box but heard it is unavailable. Any word on that Mr. Hitec

As has been already stated, Hitec is the best for customer service . I sent them three 5955 TG's that had burned up and they sent me three new ones. They also sent me a new 645 MG to replace the burned up one I sent them. Excellent communication through out the warranty process as well as good suggestions on how to better program the servos.

I use to run KO Propo and nothing else. Once I got into Losi's I gave JR's a try. KO Propo servos have held up long term, but I haven't experienced the same results with JR even though they are kinda the same company. I ended up with Hitec's because of a used crawlers I had bought through members on the forum. The Hitec's have performed well, but the excellent customer service put them over the top. If I was choosing between Hitec and JR, no question, it's Hitec.

The HFP-20 is required to program the overload protection features in the new HS-79XX and 50XX servos along with the standard/high resolution setting in the HS-79XX series. The HFP-20 is backwards compatible and works with all Hitec Digital Servos.

Yep, the HPF10 is the one I was talking about, not the 20. They have the HPF10 listed in the servo box in the documentation.

I have an 8711 and two 5955 servos on my workbench right now. The 5955s are in trucks, the 8711 is going back to Horizon as soon as I can get it in the mail. I personally think the JR is a slightly better servo when it's working well, but alot of guys around Oregon and Washington have had problems with reliability. I think thats why JR is moving from the 8711 to the 9100, I guess there is a such thing as too much torque :-(.
