| high speed and crawlability?
I plan on building a tuber next using axial axles and not sure on tranny yet but want to build it so it crawls fair and has power to throw a set of paddles on and do some formula offroad style hill climbing and such. Is there a motor setup that would do both? ESC? batteries? Or am I asking too much? And is there anything that would be somewhat water resistant? Last edited by MNorby; 09-23-2008 at 12:48 PM. |

volt up and gear down as JRH says depending on if you're running lipo's or Nimh's, lipo's alone will give you a jump in wheel speed while maintaining crawlability. I run 8 elite cells, 55 turn and I think 15 tooth x 87 spur (can't remember for sure) and I have great wheel speed. Now throw a lipo in there and and that motor comes alive for sure. I would run an Fxr with a 35 turn on 11.1 lipo for all around crawling and that formula thing you want to do. When you want to go fast just turn off the drag brake and put the paddles on with a fresh charge. that's my opinion |

Cobalt puller motors are very fast and still give torque, check em out; www.holmeshobbies.com |

Build your rig to hold 2 7.2V or 7.4V batteries. Then you could run the batteries in series or parallel giving you 7.2V for crawling and 14.4V for hauling. You could do this several ways: 1) Make two battery harnesses that connect to the ESC. One would wire the batteries in series, one in parallel. Then you just switch out the harnesses. 2) Wire in a manual switch like I did on Guido. A double-pole double-throw, center off, can be used to choose between series, parallel, and power off. 3) Wire in a toggle like above that is controlled by a servo. Then you can switch on the fly. I did this on my 1.9 truggy but so far have had trouble finding a reliable switch. Combine that with a 7T Cobalt Puller and you've got a sweet setup. Another option would be a R2 2-speed tranny from RC4WD. Like Badger built. Check out this thread. My rock racer test video - Powered by Holmes Hobbies. |

my AX10 likes the 5turn Cobalt , 76/32 for racing , 87/14 for crawling |

It is possible to have both, but the motor must be powerful and smooth on the throttle. I used a 20t TorqueMaster 540 on 4s lipo for my dirt slinging crawler.

I think I'm gonna find a 2 speed R2 and a maybe a cobalt 7T. The 2 speed R2 is 4wd in high gear too right? Watching that video and it was hard to tell and looking at the specs and pics |

Yes, it's 4wd all the time. http://rc4wdstore.com/product_info.p...roducts_id=556 http://rc4wdstore.com/product_info.p...roducts_id=593 A 20T-23T Torquemaster from Holmes Hobbies would also be a good motor. |

cool, I figured it would be but never saw for sure. Whats the pros/cons of the 20t-23t torquemaster vs a cobalt? Are eithe rof them gonna be more water resistant? |

The 540 based motors are less expensive is all. They work great but the Cobalt Puller is better IMO. Either one will survive water. I have run my 7T and 10T Cobalt Pullers underwater with no problems, just like my 540 motors. |

Mamba max is easy to waterproof with a line of silicon around the heatsink and tape over the usb hole. Probably the easiest one IMO. Depending on the speed you want, a sidewinder would be enough, but need bagging for water protection. |

If you want speed and a two speed, I would give yourself at least 50 amps continous of battery. A 25C 2000mah or bigger basically. 25C 2200 would be good.

Depends on how hard you drive it. 10 to 45 minutes?

Badgers setup was sweet but i'm wondering what 2 cobalt puller 7t motors would do??? What would Tim Allen do???? hmmmm. And with the EXV2 from Traxxas already being waterproof and good for 2 motors I would think that would be a crawling/speed demon!! Any thoughts on that??
