Can't be the initial software (v1.16) as with that software it would drop out of programming after step #8, and go straight to armed. He is able to get to step 9 so it has v1.17 software or later. Problem lies elsewhere guys.

This is what the cc support wrote to me:

The only way to upload the new firmware would be with our Castle Link USB programmer. Software is always free on our website. Cost of the link is generally only $25USD. Since you are able to get to programming step 9 though I am positive you do not have the initial software that had the issue. Updating the software may still help, but you definitely do not have the first version of software on the ESC. It would skip from step 8 to arming if you did. If you decide to get the link and it does not work I can replace the ESC for you. That's about it though. :(

So as we try and help you narrow down your prob, because we didn't have to! Your above post is what you throw out? Offended? Nope. Will I try and help you again? Nope. Good luck with getting your ESC going

Just to say that the ESC was faulty, and the crew from Castle Creations will replace it with a new one. Many thanks to Joe , CC support team
