| Motor Rebuild.. When do I know it's time?
Hello RCC.. I have a question regarding electric motor maintenance and rebuild/refresh. I have a couple of motors.. This is a general question but, specifically I'm going to ask about my Holmes 13t CrawlMaster motor that I ran for probably 5-7 scale comps which is about... we'll say 40minutes run time per event, so.. on the high side, That's about 5hrs of actual run time on the motor. I ran the motor in reverse and 6* of positive timing and it always ran healthy. I only sprayed it with the motor cleaner a couple of times and didn't do any other maintenance to it in that time. I never had the motor apart to inspect or clean. I always ran it on 11.1v. Even when I pulled the motor out to try out a few Brood motors, The CrawlMaster felt healthy. I don't much about the actual internals of an electric motor but, I want to learn to do my own work on them. I figured it would be a good idea to start by rebuilding this CrawlMaster because I know what it has been through and I know that it's still healthy. Perfect for a rebuild. My original question was.. How do I know it's time for a rebuild? Should I rebuild now to be safe or can I run the motor until it stops working right and then rebuild? Thanks, -Rick |

Often motors just need to refreshed....a comm cut and yer good to go.... I would say 5 hours is a lot, and probably do for a rebuild. The more you take care of your motor, the longer it will last and the better performance you are gonna get out of it. You can run them till they die, but often then you have to make much bigger cuts than you would of...and sometimes parts can't be saved (bearings are prime example of this), that would of been fine if they had gotten a little TLC. I've replaced more bearings in the last two years than I had in the previous 10 combined.... Later EddieO |

Ok.. I guess it's a good thing that I decided to pull that motor out when I did because It could probably use a rebuild and I'll probably save a few dollars because I pulled it out healthy. Good to know. Yeah.. Maybe I'll just have to send them to you Eddie. I'm intimidated by what's inside of these things and I'm sure you can do it with one hand tied behind your back and your eyes closed. From the information I gathered, the parts & refresh is going to be cheaper than shipping but, I don't know if I want to risk doing it myself.. I'll let the pro's do what they do. a motors, a motors, a motor, right? Pretty much all the same? I can send you a Novak, Holmes or anything rebuildable? |

Any motor pretty much......doesn't matter who makes it. I rebuild lots of other companies stuff all the time... And I can do it with both hands behind my back and eyes closed Later EddieO |
