Default 2 Traxxas XL-5's up in smoke

I know, I know there are better ESC's out there but I also remember when the big crawler tx was a modded TQ3 so rather than bash my cheap ESC let's see if we can figure this out.

Blue XL-5 with a 27 turn Axial motor on 3s. Ran fine for 15 minutes then gave up it's magic blue/gray smoke. I had ran in some water so I thought maybe that was it. Got another one from a friend and hooked it up to test it and poof. More magic smoke.

I know they are only rated for 9.6 volts but know people who have ran 3s with no problems. Any ideas?

That's about what I figured. At least it wasn't $100 plus Tekin. I've watched a guy burn up 2 of those at the track.
