Default How to decase remove heatsink from your esc / speed controller

Sorry no pictures, they don't really help apart from removing the case.

I did this successfully with an SV2 and a HH BRXL.

You will need:

A heatgun
An ESC
A small vice
A pair of needle nose pliers or dykes
Balls of steel

1. Remove the case from the ESC. In the case of the castle based ESC it's pretty straightforward, slice the sticker and use a small flathead or some type of mini pry bar to open the case. There are plastic clips which release when the outside/upper case half is pulled out and away from the bottom/inner case half.

2. Bend the wires out of the way, so they are not going to be in direct heat.

3. Load up the ESC in the vice, it doesn't need to be too tight. Grab the heatsink with the pliers/dykes and give a little tug (very light now). Did the ESC come flying out of the vice? No? Great.

4. Turn the heatgun on high and get it really close to the heatsink. With the SV2 it took a minutes or two of heating before the glue which holds the heatsink on softened. With the BRXL it took 15-20 seconds.

5. Once the glue has softened, a LIGHT tug will lift the heatsink off. If you are pulling at all on the heatsink, the glue has not melted and your are pulling on the components of the heatsink. Keep heating and it will lift off. Nabil posted once on here that you can get it hot enough to where the heatsink will just slide right off.

6. That's it, you win.

I just used a screw driver between the board & heatsink on my MMP & it popped right off. Didn't really use any force either.

I'm good to go on that list...except for the last item.

I realize people are doing this for weight savings, but the heatsink is obviously there for a reason. Anyone have some not-so-happy results in removing it? I'm building a shafty and want to use a BRXL, but it's quite large for the area I want to put it. How much hotter do these get without a HS? Anyone actually checked?

My BRXL is doing fine on 4s with a 16t 5 slot motor on around 5lb shafty rig. I heard JRH say once that his esc doesn't get hot w/out the heatsink except in super trucks running 6s kinda stuff. Removing the heatsink is more about packaging for me, but the small weight savings are there.

I have read a few threads where people pop off components of the board from not heating it up enough.

I'm about to rewire my xr10. Currently Using a novak M2 dig esc. I'm going to pull the heat sink off to make a smaller package. If it fries, oh well. Good excuse to go dual escs.
