| Better can to put handwound arms in...Tekin or Fantom??
OK, I need to upgrade/repair a pair of motors. I have a pair of Tekin machine wound cans and a pair of Fantom cans. Both have at least one shorted/stalled arms, thus the need to work on them. I can't find any info on what magnets they have to help determine which would make a better candidate to put handwound arms into. Does anyone have any guidance?? |

Both have FB9 magnets, unless Jim change specs on his machine wounds from last we talked. The only difference between cans should be color.

I usually go for the one with the stronger magnets.

OK, follow-up question. For most "Mere Mortals", is there a way to determine what the magnets are? I guess you could stick a nail to the can outside and compare "tension required to remove it", but that negates a set of magnets that may need to be zapped. |

Charlie, here is some info for you on the different TDK magnets: FB13B / FB14H | TECH JOURNAL | TDK I am sure there is an easier way, but you can measure the thickness of the magnet: FB13B / FB14H | TECH JOURNAL | TDK |

The differences between grade in the 540 motors aren't thickness related, it is the composition of the magnet. The TDK articles you linked to are showing how the various grades can be used to change motor size without performance losses. Still a good read though, thanks for the link! You would need to build a little test stand to measure the difference if you were to do a magnet test I am afraid. Give it a shot though, and do it on the inside of the can on the middle of the magnet face where you can get a better feel for the magnet strength. The real way is with a guass meter. FB6 averages about 115mT and FB9 is about 130mT measured in the center of the magnet face. |

Yeah, I am pretty sure most of that is for electric automobile applications. I wasnt sure if the thickness would vary in these motors or not....

I have come up with a highly technical way of determining magnet strength. Strip the can down, take a great big flat blade screw driver, and stick it onto the face of one of the magnets. Hold it by the handle so that the can/blade is down, and let go of the can. If it slides off its crap. If it sticks, its good. If it sticks, see how hard it is to shake it off. It doesn't take much, so you've kind of got to get a feel for it. The harder it is to shake off, the stronger the magnet. |

Very scientific! But, what if on the morning of one of the tests, you'd eaten a bowl of Wheaties and the other mornings, Lucky Charms? |

As will your motor can from a screw driver slinging ability....

You don't sling, just give it a jiggle. Its a very precise and practiced method.

But yes, that would give relative strength. | |

Are the older takin machine wounds fb9? I didn't think they were... As the big upgrade to the new hd motors was the stronger fb9 magnets. Later EddieO |

The very first ones were tokyomech and were fb6. Good call on that, I didn't even connect the "HD" with the switch to Sagami. That'll make the investigation a bit easier.
