| convert lipo to deans?
ok so since i got my thunder ac6 charger in i have a question... my charger didnt come with a deans adapter... so. should I.. 1. take one of the current adapters and convert it to deans? 2. convert my 500mah 3s turnigy battery to deans or just convert my esc from deans to whatever that plug is on my lipo? i know deans are a solid connector... so im thinking of it.. but if the current connectors are good... should I convert it as im going to pickup more 500mah lipos so id have to convert all of them too... deans is a great plug but the wires on the battery are not that big.. appreciate the thoughts... |

I use Deans on everything, that's my vote.

It's best to pick a high quality connector and go with it. I had a bunch of Traxxas stuff, so all of my batteries already had that. Then when I got into crawlers I just stuck with those connectors. I like them because they are a little bigger and easier to pull apart. For you, just change the stuff that doesn't match over to Deans. You'll be happier that they are using those connectors.

I had TRX plugs on all my stuff, but recently went back to Deans. I felt they were more secure and are simpiler to solder. I don't care for the way the TRX plugs assemble, maybe I wasn't getting the done correctly.

I like and have had good luck with the Traxxas connectors, plus that's what came stock on all three Slashes, the eMaxx, and the eRevo. So for me it was either convert all my batteries, three chargers, and two crawlers (to TRX), or convert all batteries, three chargers and 11 vehicles to Deans. Call me lazy and cheap, but I decided to go with what most of my vehicles were already running. On the other hand, I've melted every single Deans I've ever touched. Probably be easier with smaller wire and some practice, though. Once you learn to do it right and get the hang of it, I'd imagine they're fine. Last edited by Trubble; 08-24-2012 at 12:32 PM. | ||

| Re: convert lipo to deans? They can be a PITA. You can't go past the little line on the solder tab. The wire can't be too big or it will hit the plastic. Then when you put the little tab in the plastic holder you really have to push hard down on them. I actually have a little groove I put in my workbench just for the ends of the connectors so they stay in place while I force the connector down until it clicks. Once you assemble about 50 of them you get the hang. |

I use all TRX connectors. They are super easy to solder using a jig. I use two popsicle sticks. One end in a helping hands jig and the other in a pair of vice grips. Put the terminals in the sticks so that only the lines are showing. Makes a perfect solder bead and holds the connector as you solder the wire to it. I'm faster making TRX connectors than I am with deans, and you don't have to deal with heat shrink.

Most use Deans (great if you want to swap batteries with someone else), others use Traxxas and a few decent barrel type. I run "Anderson Powerpoles/Sermos connectors" on everything but the MRC 1.9 (due to space). Whatever you do, DON'T use Tamiyas!!! |

It's "OK" because it's not in the truck causing issues, but you are still wasting precious, precious, resources and energy. Really, you're here on the forum, so you want good info - just cut off and toss all Tamiya connectors now. Make new harnesses that work for your stuff sans Tamiya connectors.

If you're running stick NIMH/NICD packs then it really won't make too big of a difference which connector you're using. The INSTANT you go LiPo, change EVERYTHING to deans or trx, or some kind of high-current connector. Hell I even have my motors and esc's on deans... I've melted tamiya plugs running them with 3s LiPos. |
