Default esc question

ok Im building a Xr10 I just ordered 2 35t integy motors, now Ill never compete with this rig, and would like to only use one esc , at least for now, I thought i read somewhere that if you run two 35t motors in parallel it comes out to be 17.5t that the esc sees? Is that true? I have a old xl-5 traxxas esc( that has lipo cut off) Id like to use if it can run two 35t motors

Do yourself a favor and buy a decent ESC, why buy a top of the line comp crawler and throw junk in it? Putting a XL-5 in a XR10 is like putting a Hyundai engine in a Ferrari.

Grab a FXR and a dig switch and you will be much happier, the lack of drag brake on the XL-5 is really going to limit the possibility and without at least front/rear dig there is no point in having a MOA crawler.

I hate to say it but if you just wanted to mess around a SCX-10 would have probably been a better purchase. They are fun and you dont have to throw tons of money at them.

To answer your other question, yes two 35t motors are the equivalent of running a single motor @ 1/2 the turns. The ESC doesnt "see" anything but the amount of power the motors will draw is what is important.

In my experience, the XL-5 tends to run warm to hot when asked to go slow. And that's on one 35 turn motor and 2s. I hated mine for lack of drag brake and lousy low speed control, right until the magic smoke came out and gave me a good excuse to get a real ESC. I settled on a Holmes BRXL, but a Tekin FXR would likely fit much better in an XR.

If it's temporary, sure wire it up and go play. I wouldn't expect it to last long though. Runing the smallest pinions you can will help reduce ESC temps. Hopefully it will last long enough for you to really desire separate front and rear motor control.

You CAN'T get a turn limit by simple math. While it seems OK, it's usually worse for the ESC.

I would suggest an older used CC Mamba Max to run 2 35T motors. Great drag brake, more likely to last with your motor choice.

The best budget friendly esc is probably a sidewinder. They have decent drag brake, and will run 3 motors without issue.
