Default 2s or 3s for crawler?

wife has said she is going to buy the wraith kit I have been wanting for me for fathers day. do you guys normally use 2s or 3s lipos for your cralwers? I know the 3s would give more voltage but I would think 2s would be more than fine. since crawlers aren't really made for speed.

I vote 3s, you'll want the extra wheels speed when traction is loose.

Same here, go 3 cell the extra wheel speed when you need it an with 2 cell you just dont have that punch to jump over something, 3 cell you will.

I agree, a 35t on 3s is a good trail combo.

Well depends on your electronics setup and how you want to build your rig. 3s is the norm for comp rig and scale since power is always on tap. Downside is with more power means more things are likely to break faster.

I have seen Wraiths (kit version) built with just a Mamba Max Pro with a decent sensored motor not even specifically built for crawling but able to have enough torque to rival 3s rigs!! Reason being is on 2s you probably don't need to dump a bunch of aluminum or steel into your tranny/diffs/axles/housings etc...

Then again a Tekin Pro4 I've seen tear apart a stock Wraith driveline in two. Sure there are things you can do on your own to beef up the stock shafts but build it the way you plan on driving it.

My Wraith used to run a Holmes BRXL coupled with a Crawlmaster 16t plus SuperShafty's Bombproof transmission setup with the Robinson Gen3 Slash slipper 32p gearing along with all Robinson steel internals plus upgraded lockers and of course MIP drivelines. I ran mine on an 1850 3s 45C pack and it would last about an hour and a half of hardcore bashing and crawling.

Check out my build thread in my signature and you will see some options...now I'm running a Holmes 35T Torque Master and couldn't be happier. The 16T was just too fast!

3S! Without a doubt. And if you do keep it slow, it'll outlast a 2S battery by hours.

3s is superior. For a set amount of power, there will be less amp draw, less heat.

There's no reason to limit yourself to 2s if there are no rules mandating it (10th scale racing).

And crawlers don't have to be slow. My comp rigs equal a fast walk/ slow jog, the scalers equal a fast jog or run. I'd set up a wraith to go faster, say ~15mph to be fun.

Is it possible to get awesome crawling ability AND a top speed of say 35-40 mph?

I'd say no to "awsome", but at least pretty good. A good crawler with durable parts and a two speed gearbox could do it.
One really tricky part is the battery. It needs to be light to make for a good crawler while able to put out a decent power to get the top speed.
Opting for ~1Ah with at least 6S voltage could do the trick and allow a top speed of 40mph for half a minute or so before running out of power...

I've been using 2s due to size restriction. Found the right size 3s and I'm way happier. Gives you the wheel speed you need for rollovers and stuff

I say yes just do to the fact I have a tekin roc and on 3s it'll burnout and wheelie at the same time my scx is stupid fast on 3s but I can still go crawl slow as shit but build your drive train according to what you plan on doing

Well, i'm gonna try this 1650Kv 4 pole sensorless BL motor I just found. Run 32p 12/60 and 43/13's on 3s and see what happens.

You are going to want a sensored motor so it doesn't cog.

With a 2 speed, you can get some speed out of a scaler but I doubt 40mph.

Her's Hera, she's the fastest scaler that I know of but no where near 40.

Pro4 4000kv
Traxxas Summit Transmission
3s

this is not full throttle:

and she can crawl:
