Default I derp'ed out earlier...

I bought some 4S lipos about a month ago and just got around to installing Deans connectors on them. Well, the first battery would have been drama free if I didn't try to cut the wires at THE SAME TIME.

The wire snips completed the circuit and caused the lipo to blow out a good bit of smoke while simultaneously making one nasty spark. After that split second, I finally realized what was happening and released the wire snips.

Now, here I am staring at, what could be a ticking time bomb. I immediately took it outside (both to get out of the puff of smoke for my healths sake and to make sure I had a place to place it if the lipo caught fire). Before I placed it in the gravel, I checked the warmth and to see if it puffed. Near the wires was ever so slightly warm, like it just got off of the charger, but the lipo never puffed- only smelled bad.

After about 2-3 hours, I picked it up out of the gravel and performed the appearance exam again. Everything looked fine, still wasn't puffed and was not slightly warm anymore. Because everything was fine, I went ahead and soldered on a Deans connector.

I haven't charged it yet, just because I want to be outside and in the daytime incase things go South. Right now, it is sitting on my shop table hanging out.

So, my questions are:

1. Will I be ok from smelling just a little bit of that smoke that it created? Being a welder, that's the last thing I need. I literally smelled enough when it happened to know it was bad. It caught me while I was about to stop inhaling to exhale.

2. Will the LiPo be okay charging? Or do I need to go ahead and discharge it and buy a new battery?

3. I haven't tested the cell voltages yet, but I'm assuming that everything is fine being that it hasn't puffed?

Sorry for the long post!

go ahead and check the voltages. it might have popped one cell. and yeah thats a derp. i accidentally installed my deans backwards on my esc while rebuilding my truck and had one of my good comp batts get very warm and popped like a balloon. took me a few to figure out what was going on. bigtime derp.

I'll check the voltages tomorrow. I kind of figured I would let it "settle" overnight before I try anything else. The thing is that I've done the connector change so much, I don't really think about what I'm doing anymore. It just like setting your tire bead for your beadlock....

I'll definitely think about what I'm doing from now on! It was a good wake-up call!!

Luckily, I haven't made that mistake! I feel like that's a bigger mistake than what I did. Glad everything was alright.

You won't die from the smoke and I wouldn't risk using it because it could light up your vehicle.

Where did the smoke come from? What brand are they?

Even with that info, I would ditch the battery

I'll probably do so. Lipos are cheaper now than they were a year ago.

The smoke and spark came from the opening in the shrinkwrap where the leads go to the cells. They are Turnigy 1300mah 4S packs

Hey, thank you! I'm glad to be here!

I did test out the cells and they seem to to fine (holding their voltage) and the battery is still holding a voltage of 15.87V. The same as it was when I took it out of the packaging.

ok, this may or may not be what you wanna here.......first off, I must admit I done this very exact thing you done. battery got so damn hot, I dropped it before I realized what I had done. I done the same thing you did with yours, ran it outside, yada, yada, yada. also reinstalled a deans checked the voltage, plugged in the my charger, it charged, and I'm still using it. I did however make sure it and the charger were in a very safe place when I charged it first time.

also, still no puffing

I wouldn't run it IMO just get a new battery for the cars sake. Most likely it will still be fine but I wouldn't want the chance of it lighting up in the car way to much money on the line.

Contrary to what members have said, I went ahead and charged the battery outside, in the gravel, with a bucket over the battery while it was charging and close supervision. The Lipo charged like nothing was wrong with it and it never puffed.

With that being said, I'm willing to take the risk. What I'll do is run the battery until it reaches a certain voltage level. Like I won't run it all the way down on the first trip but I'll run it down in quarter levels and keep an eye on it during that runtime. In all honesty, I've accidentally dropped a Lipo (I'm 6'7") and I'm still running it. That was a year ago.

I appreciate the honest and help fellas! I totally respect y'all's opinions and words but I think I'll be fine.
