Default Holmes tech videos

We are starting to produce videos now for technical guides and product descriptions. Our goal is to produce one vid per week. We start with very basic information on brushed and brushless motors. The next vid will break down motor parts along with wind/kv, slot, and pole count. After that we will start covering technical wiring aspects. We will also sprinkle in short tutorial and quick start guides as time allows, such as calibrating an ESC the first time you get it.

If you have any direct questions please call/email us through Holmes Hobbies for fast response. I cannot effectively use the forum for customer support all the time, but we always have someone ready for direct methods. Feel free to ask questions here for the general forum, and to suggest other videos that would help!

Brushed versus Brushless motor comparison - YouTube

Vid two:

Video two in our series, building on the motor basics with terms and parts! Now that we have gotten the basics out of the way we will begin with more involved videos focusing on the more technical aspects. It is tough to fit much info in 5 minutes!

Vid 3, more details on slot, pole, KV, and turn counts on motors and how it can affect the motor behavior. We also outline foolproof guidelines for selecting your motor.

Would I be the only one interested in a speed comparison video? Like 16t vs 27t vs 35t vs? Or is one already out there

Vid two added to first post. We weren't able to fit in the more technical aspects within a 5 minute length, so we just focused on the parts themselves. Now we can get to Poles, slots, KV, copper, and magnets.

Thank you for creating these videos. I just bought my first Holmes motor and esc yesterday.

In video number two, you point to the complete rotor of a brushed motor and call it a stator. I thought the stator was the stationary part of the brushed motor or the fixed magnets.

I am interested in a video about how brushed motors with more armatures work. I know how 2 fixed magnets and 3 armature panels work. If there are more armature panels, then do we need more fixed magnets around it?

Can I suggest pushing in the camera on the small parts section like the spring, brush, hood, etc? I think people who don't know this material would benefit from that. The use of the pointer and tapping it was good! When you say that 5 minutes is fast, please realize that this is in free video form. The viewer has the ability to pause and rewind if the material is going too fast. This is something we can't do in the classroom! I am sorry if I sound rude with the evaluation. I am a math teacher and I can't stop reflecting when I see educational material. This is great material compared to most of the videos out there. I look forward to future videos!

The rotor aka armature of a brushed motor does contain the stator, which has the wire wrapped around it. Whether moving or fixed, the stator and wire are the electromagnet portion of a motor.

Changing the stator slot count does not need a change to the magnet pole count. A 5 slot rotor merely commutates more times than a 3 slot per revolution. We are planning a detailed vid with better shots of the commutation interface, so far the limitation is lighting and focal length of our equipment. I have already made a few cutaway motors for the demonstration, we just need to try some new diffusers and lenses as the previous attempts didn't capture well.

I really appreciate the feedback, and want to hear more suggestions! 5 minutes is just so little time to cram in the information, and I'm trying to build up basic information without talking like an auctioneer. Down the road we will have some long vids, but 30 to 300 seconds is the right length to keep average people watching all the way through. I'm finding that less detail and more general concept info is what people need at first.

So each electromagnet is a stator. I see. Thank you for the response.

Thanks for putting these together. Something you could explain in a future video is rotation, timing and which end of the motor to look at when setting these.

Next vid updated into first post.

Now I feel we have covered the parts and descriptions of parts well enough for a basic understanding, we will make a vid outlining motor rebuilds this upcoming week. It will include brushed and brushless motors.

Thank you for the suggestion, we will be sure to highlight these issues during our rebuild video.
