Default Outrunner motors

So i saw Holmes has these new outrunners and they seem spretty damn cool i was just wondering if anyone can enlighten me as to whats the advantage and how is the motor differ from a standard brush-less motor that gives it this advantage. i was wanting to try one in my jeep trail rig cause id like to have more bottom end control and more torque not speed as i just walk behind it and it already escapes me pretty quickly. right now im running a MMP and a 21.5 novak motor not entirely happy with it. kinda did a search on outrunner motors on here and didn't really come up with much

Outrunner motors have more poles (north south magnets) than an inrunner and their magnets spin with the can instead of a shaft inside the can. They typically have lower rpm/volt than an inrunner motor and much more torque.

I run an older Revolver sensorless, and true it does not have a lot of RPM's, but it is a torque monster. I run mine on 2S in a somewhat heavy rig and it's geared just above walking speed. Very smooth on the low end, and power to spare. I've run it on 3S as well, and it really perked up. Tried a 4S pack once, and started picking up driveshaft pieces about 3 seconds later ... 2S is fine for me, and I think most would be very happy with 3S.

Plus, it makes a cool whoosh sound when the drag brake kicks in.

Well good luck on that since they have been out of stock for a while. John has a thread here in electronics about the re design of them.... And issues they have had getting them re stocked....... I've been waiting and sarching the classifieds. Everytime they pop up they are gone in a heartbeat.

I'd be very cautious about running an outrunner in water (as a trail rig is supposed to do). That's the main reason not to use an outrunner.

So far I've had my outrunner underwater about a 1/2 dozen days & she keeps running strong.
Hose it clean with fresh water & spray liberally with WD-40.
Then again, I only buy $15 to $20 outrunners.

Sensored or un sensored? Haven't seen any outrunners sensored except for the Holmes.

$15 - $20 outrunners aren't gonna be sensored.

I've run sensorless outrunners under water a lot. Makes a neat swirly sound.

Mine are unsensored.
Currently I'm running a 3s pack with a 1000kv 2830 & it is geared a little low.
It is fast enough for the trail & is actually quite smooth down low.

What size outrunners bolt up to a 540 mount? Or do you need an adapter? i might try one as an experiment

Some/most of the 2830 size have 3mm shafts, but only have 16 & 19mm hole spacing.
3racing makes an adapter plate to go to a 25mm pattern (like cars use)
Sizing wise the 2830's (28mm dia, 30mm can) tend to be low KV
the 2836's (28mm dia, 36mm can) are high KV
There are a few sizes here & there that fit in a 28mm diameter size.
There are also some larger motors out there to just have to check specs.
I run a 1000kv on 3s, it isn't bad.
A 1300kv would be ok an a 2s, & would be great on a 3s
If you go to a 5mm shaft there are even more motors out there.

Here is the motor I have in my CR-01 http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=65948

For ax10 - 3RACING

General use - 3RACING
