Question 3Racing winch problem

Hello!

I recently installed the LockedUpRC Commando - High Performance Motor in my 3Racing winch. I'm using a HeyOK 2pos winch controller, and a Traxxas tqi 4ch tx.

The winch works fine with no load, but with a bit of weight on the line (maybe about 1kg), the motor kind of stalls. It sounds like it's still running, but it isn't.

The video explains it best, I think: https://youtu.be/ufUzOLdWh1g

What's going on? Any input is appreciated!

Hi. Could it be a kind of overcurrent protection like a BEC or ESC offers? Some have only 1A which could be too less. Your high performance motor seems to draw more current.

I don't think so, as it's a Castle 10A BEC set at 6V, running off of a 2s LiPo. It powers my Savox 1210sg just fine.

If you listen in the video, the motor still makes a sound as if it's running, while the spool isn't moving. I've had it apart and checked, and the transmission seems fine. Nothing visible is moving when it stalls.

Thanks for the reply though! Any other suggestions?

the 3racing winch will only pull barely over 1A in a stall on 2s, i tested mine to see what the stall current was for my winch controller

these winches will run until they destroy themselves, and the controller would stop applying power if it was overcurrent rather than continue to run like it audibly does in the vid once load is applied.

maybe the main gear on the motor itself could be too loose on the shaft and allow the motor to still turn once a big enough load has stopped the rotation of the gearbox, i have gone through a few gearboxes lately lol but the motor pinion always seems to be a very good and tight pressed fit, maybe see if you can grab a new motor/gearbox and see if that fixes the issue

did you completely unspool the line and check the grub screw in the drum is firmly secured, it should snug up against a flat on the output shaft of the gearbox just like your main motor pinion would on your rigs main motor.

Yes, the grub screw is good. All the gears in the gear box stop spinning when it "stalls", so it could be as you said, that the pinion is loose on the output shaft. I'll see if I can do some surgery to check that!

I guess it could also be inside the motor, that the rotor has come loose from the shaft!?

How good is Locked Up RC's customer service? In case I want to get a new motor/gearbox.

Thanks so far!

Ive ended up with those on trade........ Super don't like em. Typically I gut them and use for a dummy winch and use a proper servo winch to move weight....... Kms k3 ...... Heyok 4 amp controller on straight 3s power.

Sounds perfect! I just did some wrenching, and can confirm that the pinion is in fact loose on the output shaft! I'll send a message to your cs right away! Thanks a bunch!
