Default Problems with stock Axial Wraith ESC

I know very little about the Wraith but I fly R/C helicopters so I'm not totally useless. The throttle on my sons Wraith stopped working completely. As the Axial Tx was also fairly battered I took the oportunity to change the RX and Tx to a Futaba 3prk combo.
The steering works fine but still can't get the throttle to work. Went through the Wraith instructions to setup the ESC, including trying with throttle reversed but I'm getting no tones and a variety of different flashes from red and green LEDs depending on whether it is reversed or not.

So with ESC attached to motor, ESC Rx wire plugged into channel 2, Tx on and throttle trim at 0, I plug the lipo in to the ESC with the ESC switch off. I apply full throttle and switch on the ESC switch - I get continuous red flashing until I release the throttle and NO tones.

Any ideas? Is it possible to check the stock motor?
