You upset at maintenance instructions? Maybe applying and replenishing a protective barrier on the output bearing since bearings will seep water?

I didn't know I was upset.

Coating the outer bearing is one thing and I'm fine with that. But if I have to tear apart a waterproof servo and re-grease it in less than a year's time that is a different story. The day I have to do frequent maintenance on a servo is the day I choose another brand.

That brand will need just as much maintenance as the PM, maybe more.

John's mentality lies in who his primary customer is. For DoD builds, no matter how good something is, teardown and maintenance is standard procedure, and everything is designed around that. Anybody that builds a widget for DoD use expects it to be taken apart and maintained. In fact, everything that I sell off for a project has a maintenance procedure for it.

John isn't saying that you need to take the thing apart and lube it when you get it. He's just recognizing that under normal use, eventually you'll need to do it.

I'm not sure if John would share it or not, but if the 470 is exactly the same as the stervos that he sells to DoD, then he's got MTBF data for it. I seriously doubt that any other hobby-grade servo vendor has MTBF data, but if they did, I'd be shocked if it matched the PM numbers.
