| BigBlackCummins' CDW Berg Build...
Well, after buying and crawling my first Axial rig, then building another Axial rig from the ground up (my current crawler). I thought I'd give a try at building a Berg axled crawler. So I started gathering parts... CDW MOA 1.0 Chassis Couple of Berg axles 5/16" Delrin with REVO rod ends for the links (May change to 5/16" steel later) Hitec HS-55 Dig servo Couple of Dig switches JPCustoms rear lockouts Avid bearings Robinson metric 12T & 13T pinion gears I have a Hitec 5995TG servo I was going to use for steering. I planned on pulling my CC Mamba Max ESC, Spektrum SR3500 RX and HB Rovers from my current Axial crawler for this build. I still need to order a couple HH 35T motors, Axial axle stubs, VP High Steering Knuckles and eventually would like to get some Mayhem wheels. I was planning on running the front axle un-clocked to begin with, then see if it is needed once I get it on some rocks... What are your guys' experiences with this? I've read a lot of info before starting this build, but if you guys' have any suggestions, or things that didn't work for you, please post up! It's all about learning for me, and I know I have plenty more to learn!! Here are a few "starter" pictures... More to follow. Last edited by BigBlackCummins; 05-29-2009 at 06:33 PM. |

We'll have to find some local rocks and test them out once they're both complete.

Fubars lockouts are nice, but I already have lockouts coming from JPCustoms... I'm very excited to get it all together, but trying to plan it all out before just throwing it all together... Not sure what my skid is at yet, still waiting on shocks. I'll be trying my HB Rovers first for the added ground clearance, but if they don't cut it, then I'll throw my Panthers on. Some updated pictures... Belly height @ 3" should be about right. Showing the straight upper links. Time to start soldering and wiring... Still need to find another pair of Losi shocks for the rear, and am waiting on some Holmes 35T motors to come in too! Then after this weekend's comp I'll pull all electronics from my shafty to bring this one alive! |

Nice build, looking good......I think I see a problem though....The upper links already look like there hitting the case, when you try to compress the rear, its not going to like it.

Good eye! Ya, I noticed that it's real close. Not touching yet, but real close. Might have to shorten the uppers a little. I'll wait to see what it looks like once the rear shocks are finally on, then roll it down as needed. Last edited by BigBlackCummins; 04-16-2009 at 10:05 AM.

The "old crawler" has Axial HD standard ratio gears up front and their HD lower ratio gears in the rear diff, plus SS lockers in both ends... I think my days of broken diffs are gone, next weak link seems to be axles! Plus, I need to sell those diffs to recover some of the Berg build cost... just ask my wife!:-(

My Axial took a bad beating on Saturday @ the Comp. First I broke an axle on going through the 2nd to last gate, by rolling off an off camber ledge, then while 3-wheelin it back up to get to the finish I bound the other axle while diggin around a corner and literately ripped the housing off with the "C" still attached, all within a foot of the finish! I was able to get to the finish and thankfully is was my last course of the day! Needless to say, quite a few people were impressed with the power of HH 7T puller motor! So, needless to say my Axial junk is now all pulled apart and some things have now found their new place on the Berg. I'll have updated pictures either tonight or tomorrow, and maybe pictures of the Axial carnage too! * Edit - Got some pics of the Carnage This is why I wanted to build a Berg! * Last edited by BigBlackCummins; 09-06-2009 at 09:01 PM. More updated pictures... Got all my electronics mounted and wired, except for my BEC. Still need the motors and I'm still planning on shorten all of my servo wires too, for a nice clean look. Also I want to go thru the axles and replace all the factory bearings with some avid bearings that I have, and locktite every screw in the axles. I threw on a set of REVO shocks I had laying around, since they are the right eye-to-eye length, but will be pulling them in favor of some Losi shocks when the other pair arrive in my mailbox. Steering is factory right now, but I will see about changing that a little later on, I'm waiting on some lockouts that I ordered too. Plenty of room under the reciever for the BEC And a couple of pics with the new lid... Hopefully I can get some motors soon and start getting used to the way it handles in time for the next comp... I'll post more pictures once it's finally together and running... |
