Kinda sorta. It helps me to align the two surfaces and then apply a drip of glue that wicks into the crack. Not as pretty as your method. The socket cap is to press the plate onto the sidewall with a lot of force so the sidewall does not move at all while cutting. Hence the thick chrome steel. The softer the rubber the more it wants to buckle in front of the blade when cutting. I'm lost with CF sticker-wheels.

Sorry to fill your thread Joel.
D-Wray suggested a while back that I use the AKA product and I just haven't tried it. The 406 was Jake's suggestion and what he used during Boss Claw prototype development. 406 is what I went with because McMaster (McBastard per JeremyH) delivers O/N standard shipping to my house since the are in LA. If the 406 fails I'll make my next set with AKA glue. I see this as a learning curve. There will be screw ups on my part.

Go for it man. They look cool, not sure how they drive yet though. Hope to knock out the other three tonight to be ready for a CI delivery today or tomorrow.

That's pretty freaking awesome. Nice clean work. I'm sure if you could mass produce those jigs, you'd have people lined up for them.

That would be a butt joint alright. At least in construction terms.

I 2nd the AKA glue. I haven't messed with cutting the Doos yet but all of my cut n shuts in the past & go fast gluings have been made with AKA. I generally use it for the edge to edge mating like Will illustrated & follow up with IC2000 on the inside of the tire body to seal the deal.

Im interested to see whatcha think of the pins. Im afraid the sun will cry blood & the seas boil if YOU leave your clappy Rovs on the bench for a set of pins but so far...Im really impressed with the compounds Ottsix used on these kicks.

In my experience, the 406 and aka glue are almost identical in how they behave. Both tend to slightly melt the rubber at the glue seam

Time will tell. I need to actually run them. Change is good untill it sets you back.

I was expecting "a blind squirrel can find his nuts every once in a while" comment...

And nitrile gloves...and skin. Yes, the rubber is one within seconds of contact.

Very nice! I have been wanting a smaller version of these every since I tried them.

Looking forward to the results.

I see the large OD as the primary and maybe only Achilles heel. At least that's easy to solve. Maybe a little narrower, maybe not. Either way not having to cover my mill and garage with rubber dust is a huge plus. The uniform sidewall thickness and dead rubber compound really reduce bounce even with stiffer foams vs a clapped Rover. Testing will be fun no doubt.

I wondered if you were cutting with a blade or letting the jig do the work....

When I built my first set of wheels I totally forgot to trim the inside bead ring as a relief for the bead to sit into. It didnt take long and there were 2 Boss claws with the beads perfectly cut off. After that, I thought it would be really cool to make a bigger one and let the wheel errrrr jig cut the tire for you. Thats about as far as I got with it.

If Delrin, with a thick lip can cut a bead, I bet you could make a nice jig the same way out of a better material and sell quite a few, or at least to a couple of guys and then that guy could charge people to cut the beads. Hell, if somebody would cut the tire like yours, I have no problem gluing it.

Somebody besides me sounds like the perfect guy for this project!

That's signature material right there!

I'd be happy to have a jig like that to be able to do the tire work for people. I'll even glue them

The rubber will rip before the 406 joint lets go. That stuff is awesome!!

I don't think Delrin will cut rubber. Not more than a couple of times before dulling at least. I didn't cut any reliefs but left a little side wall on the corner of the tread bed for a nice flat junction. Cutting the tires is really easy. Glueing is slow but not that bad with a little music in the background.

That's a great signature indeed.

Thanks.

Update:

Last night I was pondering methods to cut the tread bed in a perfectly straight line, leaving a perfectly flat surface all the way across the bed. I knew I need something longer than a razor blade so I didn't have to move an object to make the cut. Then I recalled that I had a ~40 year old German non-disposable microtome blade left over from a retired piece of equipment from grad school. Search mictotome and look at what they are for and you'll understand how much sharper than a new razor blade one is. Insane dangerous. Needless to say it works like a champ. It's so easy to aim and cut off tiny slivers of rubber with just a little pressure. I got a little done on the other three last night and will finish them Sat if life allows.

Man Joel, you are really "splitting hairs" on this project aren't you?
Next thing you know you will be busting an optical comparator and cmm out
of your closet to tell us the true position deviations between the two sides...!

Got one I can borrow? I promise it'll have only a little bit of glue, dust and dog hair on it when I'm done.
