Go for it man. They look cool, not sure how they drive yet though. Hope to knock out the other three tonight to be ready for a CI delivery today or tomorrow.

That's pretty freaking awesome. Nice clean work. I'm sure if you could mass produce those jigs, you'd have people lined up for them.

I 2nd the AKA glue. I haven't messed with cutting the Doos yet but all of my cut n shuts in the past & go fast gluings have been made with AKA. I generally use it for the edge to edge mating like Will illustrated & follow up with IC2000 on the inside of the tire body to seal the deal. Im interested to see whatcha think of the pins. Im afraid the sun will cry blood & the seas boil if YOU leave your clappy Rovs on the bench for a set of pins but so far...Im really impressed with the compounds Ottsix used on these kicks. JD

In my experience, the 406 and aka glue are almost identical in how they behave. Both tend to slightly melt the rubber at the glue seam

I wondered if you were cutting with a blade or letting the jig do the work.... When I built my first set of wheels I totally forgot to trim the inside bead ring as a relief for the bead to sit into. It didnt take long and there were 2 Boss claws with the beads perfectly cut off. After that, I thought it would be really cool to make a bigger one and let the wheel errrrr jig cut the tire for you. Thats about as far as I got with it. If Delrin, with a thick lip can cut a bead, I bet you could make a nice jig the same way out of a better material and sell quite a few, or at least to a couple of guys and then that guy could charge people to cut the beads. Hell, if somebody would cut the tire like yours, I have no problem gluing it. Somebody besides me sounds like the perfect guy for this project! |

The rubber will rip before the 406 joint lets go. That stuff is awesome!!

Update: Last night I was pondering methods to cut the tread bed in a perfectly straight line, leaving a perfectly flat surface all the way across the bed. I knew I need something longer than a razor blade so I didn't have to move an object to make the cut. Then I recalled that I had a ~40 year old German non-disposable microtome blade left over from a retired piece of equipment from grad school. Search mictotome and look at what they are for and you'll understand how much sharper than a new razor blade one is. Insane dangerous. Needless to say it works like a champ. It's so easy to aim and cut off tiny slivers of rubber with just a little pressure. I got a little done on the other three last night and will finish them Sat if life allows. J

Man Joel, you are really "splitting hairs" on this project aren't you? Next thing you know you will be busting an optical comparator and cmm out of your closet to tell us the true position deviations between the two sides...! Last edited by House; 05-31-2013 at 09:04 AM. |
