Is it still a 50/50 or did you move the cab/chassis forward?

I like it. It looks effective and original

I am not positive how to answer your question...

The lower links did not change but one of the design aspects of the truck is having the cab much further forward than standard designs.

Does that help?

Looking around the XR section I saw some of the motor mods that those guys were making. After getting something caught in my motor and destroying a winding, I had some spare parts so I decided to follow suit and see what I could do.

First off, I lathed down the can. That turned out to be a much bigger deal than I anticipated.

Stock can 88g

Lathed down can 72g

Then I saw in another thread that they were going to AL timing rings. I didnt think you could really save that much weight from something so small but after seeing the numbers I was amazed at how much that steel timing ring weighs.

Motor can used as a reference since my scale has a hard time weighing 1g

Steel timing ring net 4g

Delrin timing ring net 1g

Then, I ditched the screw posts on the end bell and replaced them with AL hardware. I also replaced the timing screws with AL hardware.

Final weight was 1oz lighter!

6.5oz for stock

5.5oz for modified

I am going to try it on the rear and if it works out then I will do it on the front.

No problem. Real thanks goes out to the guys who put all the hard work in and making motors lighter.

Man, not a lot of time this past week for anything besides work!

I didnt want to run the modified motors in my car last week since I had a comp and I didnt want to take a chance. Just last night I put them together. EddieO warned me that the Delrin timing rings would not hold the end bell securely, fortunately, he was right. This made me take a much better look at the whole deal.

First off, I guess I did not show what I did with the heat sinks well enough for most to see.

I took these heat sinks and took them off the end bell completely. I then replaced them with a simple AL screw.

Here is the stock end bell

And end bell with the AL screws inserted instead. Hopefully this clears this part up for everybody.

Now I was looking for a better way to secure the timing ring but I didnt want to give up the delrin for the weight savings. While looking at it I now had four screws coming down into the timing ring rather than the stock two (above mod). I made some small sections of the delrin ring that were secured by the original timing ring screw and the new screw that replaced the heat sinks. The little tab inside the can that holds the ring/end bell in is right in the middle of the delrin and it allows for full timing adjustment. These tabs wont even show up on my scale they are so light. So, about 4-5g weight saving. Pretty sweet.

Original timing ring

Replacement delrin tabs

I ran my car for the first time last night with these delrin tabs and the lathed down motor cans. I was expecting to notice some power loss. I couldnt tell if there was. If anything I would guess you might loose some power from the mods but gain some from the weight loss?

I am pretty stoked about this mod. Its been a really long time since I have been able to loose a significant amount of weight like this and especially from such a horrible spot to have it.

Great work on those motors.....what's the OD of your can now that it's been cut down??

I just took it until it looked good. I tried to leave a bit more since I am skeptical of the thickness and the abuse it can take.

1.350 is what it looks like.

Pretty nifty idea on the timing rings......probably will hold way better that the delrin replicas. The only issue I can see if make sure the screws stay insulated on the bottom. Since they are held down with the brush hood screws, you are basically fully connected to the circuit on each side. The magnets will conduct, so if those screws end up touching the magnet on each side, its gonna make a nice big bang and let out some smoke. I would make sure they are not too long and maybe try to insulate them on the bottom some how (enamel nail polish works).

Eddie,

What is the purpose of the circuit board on the end bell? Is this just to reduce noise? If so, can it be removed?

Correct, they are meant to reduce electrical noise which can cause radio interference......but with todays radios, its not much of an issue anymore unless something else is not right.....

I sold probably 1200+ of the first version of the Creep, which was the Reedy based PT teardown....not a single of them had a cap on them, and I have never had someone complain about glitching....

You would be fine to remove them if you wanted to.

Now I can lose that .1g that I gained from using cap head screws instead of button

1. What thickness of can can you get down to before you start to see a significant drop in magnetic field strength
2. Would an aluminium can with a thin steel sleeve (shim) work

Dunno if there is a really an answer for #1.....so far, we've gone down about as far we can go and it doesn't really measure any different and we have seen little to no difference in drag brake.....torque hasn't really dropped much either.

As for #2, well in theory an aluminum can will work......how well, dunno....a steel lining would help over come certain issues you would encounter. Guess we will see when the first aluminum cans hit. Workin on it
