I think we need gears that will break at some point,if not the part that is gonna break is gonna be something more expensive like the motor or tearing the gearhouse apart, he he
I love to have small projects in my head at all times. Inspiration, ideas, and time to play is my fun in life.

It is an amazing material but if you are looking for the strongest gears hardened steel is better. In this application I can see the reasoning to shave some serious weight tho.
Most people think titanium is unbelievably hard to machine also. Like it's some kind of magical metal. It's not hard, it's not soft, it is very resilient.
Is it the best choice for gears in a Berg case? I have no idea. I'll try it out and if it works great, if not I'll swap in the 300m gears I'm making at the same time.

I think titanium will work fine. Its stronger then the stock axial gears for sure. I just think its funny how everybody thinks titanium is magical and indestructible. I'm sure if you could produce them people would buy them for the decrease in weight.

I like the pretty white sparks when Im grinding it and when it turns blue on the lathe

But real question .... you use a lot of coolant when you work with Ti or just small bites and fast feeds?

Be careful if its turning blue. The chips can flash and if there are a lot of them in the machine its almost impossible to put out the fire. Coolant is def a good idea

That part was more of a joke lol. Ive read around a bit trying to learn about machining Ti and remember it saying that. Almost like a magnesium fire is my take.

It does work harden so it must be kept cold.
It will catch fire but not like magnesium. Mag is alot more combustible.
Ti will burn like embers and if there are alot of fine chips it will throw a flame.
I use water soluable coolant so I wont have a problem unless I loose cutting clearance.
Cutting gear profiles will be in oil in a manual bridgeport so cuts will be light to keep the temps down.

Its good to see there are a few other "old school" machinists out there to do this kind of stuff. Most of the guys I work with would have no idea how to cut a gear without a CNC. They wouldn't know what an index head is never mind how to use one Lol.

OK you have me beat Lol. I never learned tape machines. I learned a lot on manual machines and went right to CNC

You are a very detail oriented guy. Great looking build. Very impressive stuff. Why do you r think your little batteries fell off so quickly?

Thanks Harvo
I think the 325 lipos are just too small for the demand.
I only use Thunder Power because I think they are the most reliable. The 325 mah at 70c is 22.75 amps constant.
850 mah at 45c is 38.25 amps constant.
I noticed in my Sporty the 325 doesn't match the top speed the 850 gives me. The obvious reason is the constant does not meet the need of the electronics.
Even though the burst should not have that problem, the battery is so small, I believe the burst duration is shorter than the time it takes to get to top speed.
The 850 on the other hand meets all my demands. I can run two long courses on one lipo charge and power/speed is what it should be.
I know I could probably give the 450/480 mah a try but I don't want to keep buying lipos. Infact I have NIB 325s I need to sell or use for leds in the scalers.

The Ti lockers are one step closer. I just need to mill out the tang reliefs specific to my axle shafts.

My pants just got squishy.

Machined for a perfect fit on my modified 300HDs.

Now I just need to get the front one in my junk before Sunday.

Funny thing..........I started pulling the front case apart to swap in the Ti locker and realized..........I never greased the gears.
Maybe 4 Comps short of a full season and every Sunday free crawling.
These gears look brand new, not a blemish on them. They did make an audible sound but not bad.

So if anyone thinks RCBros gears are over priced...........yo be trippin boo!
Great work William, over engineered and it shows.
The next batch should be Cryo'd and TiAln coated......ok?

You may notice I had to swap out a gear case. We free crawled at a waterfall we haven't been to in a long time and my CCC case didn't like 50 foot tumbles to the bottom,.... several times.

I needed something in a hurry so the Dlux case fit the bill with some extra bling.
So now with our season final comp this Sunday I will be in good position to steal 1st place, if the movie San Andreas comes true. Wish me luck

I have very little VP grease on my gears myself,, just enough to have some grease between the teeth on the gears,,
I have finished building bought axels and yesterday I did put some power on the axels and they did run extremly smooth,, almost to quiet for my liking..
But I have heard that the berg gears dont make so mutch noice when proparly installed..

BTW,, I notice you have a gap between the pinion and the first gear,, how wide gap do you have??
I have the pinion almost 100% into the first gear,, Is that to close??

The picture is deceiving. The pinion is further back than the 2nd gear because of the pinion set screw and the endplay in the motor. But Berg gears do like a lot of play, I always set my pinion more loose than any other gear pitch.

TiAln coating is good for rugged abrasive conditions but I bet TFL coating would be better for the slipperiness..

Today I swapped out my front weight system for a combo of RCBros wraith plates and Krazed builds Heavy Hangers. They fit perfect and got the weight .4oz heavier but almost all below the spindle centerline.
This rig is already stable and predictable and this upgrade should make it more so.
