Default My Hydra-Steer System

Hey guys, I wanted a more scale look on my wraith! so took some measurements, hopped on Ebay, and started ordering
the gear pump and cylinder!
10mm Bore x 20mm Stoke Cylinder ($20)
Cheap chinese 6v Brushed Gear Pump ($6)
I'm using a Dynamite Tazer 15t ESC ($40) to control the direction of the pump which is connected to the steering output of the RX.
the fittings and hose im using are SMC 4mm LockLine fittings and 4mm ATP SURETHANE Hose ($24)
Might upgrade the pump once I have everything where i want it, for a roll-type pump.

Yes, This system actually works, It has enough force to turn the tires lock to lock on carpet. And is not slow at all. The pump only runs when the steering input is given. CW rotation of the pump = Left Turn, CCW rotation of the pump = Right Turn

The only down fall of this system, is the wheels dont return to center, like a servo would. But for crawling, I can get use to this!

Heres some pictures to give you an idea of what i've pieced together!

10mm Bore X 20mm Stroke Stainless Steel Cylinder with 4mm SMC LockLine Fittings

Cheap Chinese 6v Gear Pump From Ebay

The pump is Mounted where the RX box use to be, All of my electronics are relocated to the back, and the battery is moved to the front.

Dynamite Tazer 15t ESC to control the gear pump motor.

Ive been looking around for a small brushed boat ESC that has reverse.
Can anyone lead me in the right direction???

Does it work? How fast is it? Can you take a video?

For a esc have you looked at using a sidewinder micro.

That is awesome. You are definitely thinking outside of the box. I didn't know that such small-scale hydraulic components were available. I wonder how we could work those cylinders into the suspension system?

How do you plan to bleed all the air out of the lines?

If it's not double ended and mounted like a real truck it's kind of meh.

B for effort though

Many 1:1s use a single ended ram

Sure do but they lose their cool factor when tractor parts are used.

I know lots of guys that run a single sided ram on their 1:1 buggies.

I like overkill I guess. Got a 2200lb buggy with 3" psc parts.

PSC makes single ended rams for that application.

I am going to disagree that using tractor parts are not cool. Randy Torbett build this buggy in 2003 I think and used New Holland tractor axles and dominated the comps in the south with it.

Are you serious? This is a flipping awesome set up and could potentially change scale crawling forever.

I was running a single ended ram 14 years ago and never had any problems. About 6 years ago I went with a double only because I got a good deal on it. You don't get any more power with a double ended ram just a more balance steering lock to lock.

Ill be taking a video of the rig in action this weekend. I have a video of it working without the wheels on the ground, just a rough plumbed, half mounted deal. Heres the link - http://youtu.be/hCJ9-BWfO3o
@Skerb, it is just as fast as a servo.

@ C*H*U*D, the cylinder is put in a bath of hydraulic oil. the line from the pump at also put in hydraulic oil. the pump is ran, and then the lines are connected to the cylinder. yes i realize there is air bubbles in the lines in the pictures, and i knew someone would say something about it.

@Diablo666, Ill defiantly look into that ESC. thanks for the info!

@ DJjiz, Oh sorry, i forgot you are the master of all things crawling. let me go right out and buy a double ended cylinder!

If you are looking for cylinders, look on ebay or amazon for pneumatic cylinders. if it holds air, its gunna hold liquid! be aware that certain types of seals in pneumatics do not like oil and will swell up from the oil.

and for pumps, check out what the RC Submarine guys are using. thats where i got the pump idea from. and i will be switching my pump out for a Roll-type Pump (Peristaltic pump)

as for hydraulic suspensions?! use the same concept, anything is possible if you can get your wife to let you order parts!

03 was a long time ago and this isn't the first hydro setup but if there's room on a high horse I'd like a ride.

lets see these other hydra-steer setups that cost more than the rig itself.

Point of me posting this was, to get the idea that the resources are out there to make this happen, and for fairly cheap! You dont have to spend $600 on a "RC Heavy Equipment" Hydraulic system to make your own
