Default Fried my wireless controller

So got a RC4WD Warn 9.5 CTI winch for Xmas. Purchased a RC4WD wireless controller. Hooked everything up according to the directions that came with the controller and when I went to do the binding one of the chips on the control board started to glow and before I could unhook the battery it burnt a hole through the case. The power was coming from a small 3S 11.1V 1300 20C battery. Has anyone had this issue or what went wrong.

Yeah, don't waste your time and money on anything other than HeyOK's controller. Excellent products and service.

Same with mine on 2s it was great but 3s killed it!. I use a hobbywing waterproof esc i think i found it for 30 ish dollars it is overkill but it is warerproof and you can use the extra channel on your radio to control it!

Thanks everyone for your input. I want to see if A-main will get me another controller since I purchased it from them. Then go from there.

The RC4WD Warn wireless controller is rated up to 11.1v, but a fully charged Lipo has more than 11.1v. The RC4WD product description on their site includes the following note:

"Some Lipo battery voltage can be higher than 11.1 volts. Please be careful and check voltage before using your battery. Use a BEC if needing to use a 3 cell lipo."

I made the mistake of not reading that note (which is towards the bottom of the page) before frying one myself. On 2s or hooked up to a BEC that limits voltage to 11.1v, they work fine.

I did the same thing when I went to a 3s lipo lol.

I already had a bec with a Holmes rx bypass. So I just ordered his rx bypass with auxiliary output and used that to power my winch.

It sounds like you did something wrong, but winch controllers are not reliable including RC4WD.

The only thing I might of done wrong was follow the directions. But got in contact with RC4WD today and they are sending me a new controller. So see what happens.

^^ That's the problem. If you want to run it off a 3S pack, you need to use a BEC to limit the voltage to the controller. Otherwise, you'll fry it.

Mine started to smoke after a while - without use, hooked up to the Rx, on 2s! Got me a HeyOK one and never looked back!

The pack that I was using for this hadn't been used in three months so it was not fully charged. But I am going to go down to a 2s pack for the winch.
