Default Iceland Arctic truck

These trucks are cool looking. The top one looks a lot like a TRX4 Sport.

I've always loved these trucks with the big, wide tires.

The Sport does resemble the top one.

I found this Amarok a few years back. It’s a cheap Chinese 2wd but does have fender liners and an interior.

That WPL is on Losi Mini axles.

I happened across these a few days ago. Kenworth 963 I believe they’re called. Didn’t realize the shear size until I found this pic.

There were 2 main versions, the 963 and the Super 963, shown in your picture, more commonly called the Super Kenworth. We used them on remote desert crews doing oil exploration as supply trucks, fuel or water trucks, some fitted with Hiab cranes so that you could use them for tire changes on the others. They could carry quite a load and had decent range with 550 gallons of fuel capacity in twin tanks.

They are pretty big but I'd guess that the girls in the photo are below average height. The Super 963 ran 29.5R25 tires. Some were fitted with a system to alter tire pressures from inside the cab, useful where you had changing conditions between soft drift dunes and rocks. These had air hoses run outside the tires to the center of the wheels where they attached to a swivel, obviously not the best system where there was a lot of brush.

Thanks for some info on them. Videos of them pulling land rigs is where I first spotted them. I had heard stories that they would move rigs this way in pets of Africa as well. Too many power lines in the continental US to do this.

I haven't seen any since the early '90s though. Probably replaced by smaller trucks carrying more compact and more modular rigs. They were impressive to see coming across the desert as they looked closer than they were due to the size until they started looming over you. I kinda miss them, to be honest.

The Arctic Truck was what I was going for here. Unfortunately RC tires just don’t don’t cut the mustard in cold conditions. I do agree the X4 Sport body suits the style which is obviously one of the reasons I chose it. Portal clearance the other biggie.

These type of trucks inspired me to build this thing and a trailer.

Default Iceland Arctic truck

@smog
Were the tires not floating enough or the idea just does scale down?

@Szczerba
Did that start life as a Kyosho?

Both good looking rigs.

Thanks guys. I had the tires and wheels sitting here along with a mostly put together CR-01. Scored the Kyosho Blizzard body after having a “build idea” pop in my head.

Szczerba’s CR-01 Build (#62) Arctic Truck

I wanted to a truck style body with large tires like the 1:1’s above but couldn’t pass up trying to make the Blizzard look cool. I dunno what it is supposed to look like but I think it has the Arctic Truck vibe.

Not floating well enough and lack of traction. RC tires and foams quickly stiffen and freeze with declining temps. It takes away enjoyment of picking lines and running them. In my experience on snow, the traction provided by Tracks compared to tires is night and day.
