Default Traxxas Pede vs RC4WD R2

Ok - I'm making a parts list for a near future build and am having a hard time deciding on a tranny to use. This won't be a comp rig, just a trail beater. I'll be using some kind of brushless motor, Crawlmaster or something of the likes.

Anyway, I know the R2 is a pure crawling tranny, and gearing can't be changed. Is that the only advantage that the Pede has over it? Is the pede that much stronger? I don't want to be afraid to hammer the throttle though... and the R2 is pretty pricey compared to a $25 pede trans off eBay.

Whats your gearing set up and how do you like it?

Consider price and parts availability I would go pede...I really dont think the r2 can take the constant abuse a beater would see....Also consider the Axial tranny as well (if you can find one)...

I stripped both front and rear ring gears in my wk axles with a 45T turning a locked pede. I have the hardened gears now and i can have the moab XL's spinning and bouncing on the concrete with no breakage whatsoever.

1 vote for the pede

Well, those two comments alone make me happy. There are some big rocks out here and I don't want the tranny to be the weak link.

What kind of gearing are you running in the Pede kurt? Locked, you must have removed the slipper right?

Pede tranny with bearings and aluminum idler (or the new steel idler gear). My TLT has one in it for over a year of hard crawling and no problems.

How can I tell if its a new one with bearings and steel idler? Are there any visual differances?

As far as I know they have the aluminum idler gear. Look for the grey cased pede tranny. They should have it. If you want the ultimate in strength get the RCM steel idler gear and aluminum/steel diff case (quite spendy). I have them in an aluminum pede tranny case that I was going to put in a crawler but decided to go with an r2 for the smaller size. If your interested in my pede tranny pm me.

Don't forget about the B4 Stealth. Nice and compact. I run one in my tuber with a 35t lathe and 14/87 gearing.

I forgot to mention that the pede tranny would be more forgiving to the brushless motors because of the slipper. The r2 doesnt. It could be the difference of broken parts if you are not careful.

Ah - thanks. I'll check it out.

Kurt, I forgot to ask, I take it you have plenty of wheel speed with that setup?

HECK YES. haha I think its a perfect gear combo for my type of driving. It has plenty of grunt at low speeds and the rooster crawler gives me excellent control. I still have enough wheelspeed to spin the tires on a tile floor and throw up rooster tails of dirt on demand. If you wait another 10 minutes i'll post a video link. Its not great but my wife won't let me video the truck in the back yard with the camera close. She says i look weird.

edit: it seems pretty lame to me now. this was right after i got it all put back together. i belive this is even before i went to a droop setup. uploading right now......

ok the other video is still processing. this is an even older one. my first video of the truck. still had the jolt esc and was sitting on uber stiff springs. its not a great vid but you can see the pede take a little abuse.

http://video.yahoo.com/video/play?vid=994016

and here is the second one. keep in mind the tires are moab xl's. they look smaller from far away.

Ok - I think I'm sold on the pede trans. Thanks for the vids! You really do beat on that thing, especially running XL's

I like that you are running WK axles as that is what I'll be using... and I think there is going to be PLENTY of room in the tuber.

Thanks for all the help.

Pede trans is quiet, R2 Tranny is loud!!! Ive ran both, R2 = all metal i broke shafts at first then i upgraded to Punisher shafts, then i was breaking Axel's. I moved to pede and never broke anything (i try to get my wheels out of a bind without touching it ) slipper helped alot!
