| time to post it up
I have been working on a new crawler lately. not as fast as some other builds, but i am trying to get my new house in order before i get pulled onto my hobbies too far. i dont really know what to call the beast, but it is a maxx axle platform, with a stick design. i mounted the axles on titanium skidplates (super deal at the local shop) and mounted a 1/4 inch delrin skidplate behind that where the chassis braces would mount on a stock maxx. on this delrin platform sits one pede tranny. each axle has its own tranny, which allows me to run a stick design chassis. so far i need to modify the delrin platforms to get a better departure/ approach angle under the trannies. i have the front (or back, time will tell) tranny mounted and need to finish locking the rear before i can call it good. hows about i get some help with the name? once i find my camera cable i can post up the 20" wheelbase, 7" underbelly thingie. The Thingie. i kinda like that. |

Wow...thats cool! So you have a separate tranny mounted to each axle?

crap!! talk about some sudden interest! the long wheelbase doesnt hurt me because it has so much underbelly clearance. the only thing that hangs up is the rear tranny really. yes adam, seperate tranny to each axle. i thought about using different trannies, but it was easiest to just use some stampede ones because i had two laying around. that, and locking the diffs is easiest on them. i just locked up the diff so both outputs rotate like any other center tranny, but i only used one side for output. this project has taken me over 6 months just to get running. i made another chassis and was bought revo shafts for the conventional deal a while back, but it never came together. i dont know what i will run for a body. i really never use them. |

I was thinking of something like this a while ago, but with a tranny mounted to the front axle only. Then a driveshaft would run up into the chassis for clearance and then out to the rear axle. Yours is definatly a creative truck. You might be able to jack up the a arms on the axles for more clearance under the diffs. |

the a-arms are sagging a bit more than when it was first built. i tried to triangulate the arms together but it needs more crossmembers to be solid. the arms are way too flexy for how i did it. i guess thats why rpm stuff doesnt break. to finish this thing up i need to: 1) make a new bulkhead brace with susp lockers 2) install rear steer in the arms 3) paint up a body. i have a hummer body that would work 4) possibly turn the rear diff around and mount the tranny off the back. i dont know about turning the rear around. it would make all kinds of clearance, and all kinds of work. |

cleaned up the build some today, and then proceeded to make it need more work. locked out the arms fully and solid. redid the wiring. changed the steering for better response. this thing is nuts! it climbs just about anything so far. its nothing but clearance and grip. i managed to screw up the stick chassis again. im trying to figure out how to improve it more though... |

thanks man. i should post up some more pics as it evolves. it has its weak points from lack of chassis. the weight of the axles is too much for the curent design. i am thinking of changing it a bit like project WTF was built, but with shocks.

It was not a stolen idea, because i first built the maxx motor axles and john was in the process of building his when i mentioned it, and i beleve it was then when it was first on this forum. But we both had the ideas in our heads before anybody talked about it, so i guess there was 3 people thinking of the same sort of design, but it was not stolen.

i remember you mentioning putting motors attached to gd600's on the axles. how did the gear ratio work out? that would be much more compact, but my emaxx is fast enough with lathe motors.

It was a little high for my taste, but would be good with lathes. I had a motor with a 15 tooth and a i think 81 spur on the diff pinion, and a 15 on the gd. Im back to a shafty now cause i wanted a more scale approach, but it is good for a comp crawler, i had steel hybrid axles so i was able to weld brackets but im shure you can do it with brackets bolted on the maxx hardware. |
