| Cheap Portable Rock Obstacles
The most recent thing I've done is take some spare lumber destined for the trash and build some portable obstacles. I've built these so that I can lay them wherever I want across a trail (or in my case a flowerbed). I also built one to act as a ramp to access some of the large boulders I moved in my backyard when the house was built. I took some 4x4 landscape timbers which I was going to throw away and just started cutting them up at different angles on the compound miter saw. When I was at Ace yesterday buying cotter pins I picked up 2 cans of cheap gray primer (one light, one dark) and painted my creations in a gray camo to try and give the appearance of rock. FYI - the individual pieces are held to the fence picket with liquid nails which I followed up with one wood screw for each piece. With the combination of liquid nails and a screw holding each piece on they are extremely rugged. Pick a funky angle and cut! Figuring out how wide to make each obstacle Gray Camo paint to try and give a rock effect. I tried to make the surfaces light and the sides and cracks dark to give a shading effect. |

These have actually turned out to be a lot more fun than I thought they would. I've cranked out 5 more and they are like obstacle lego's! I didn't intend to place them next to each other but I quickly figured out you can put them next to each other in different arrangements and make a cool crawling course in a relatively short area.

Pretty sweet, and a lot lighter than rock.

You could also take some of the spray foam and fill in the gaps a little to get more of a slab effect. Or space them farther apart and use the foam to blend in the edges.

This is a good idea. Easily portable and you could include plenty of elevation change with longer pieces. I may try this in the future.
