Default The Leafed Willy

Ok so I am starting this new thread for the willy I bought off of BigSki. I haven't totally finished my first willy build, (I think I just need to add some weight in the front wheels, and still have a bit of bump steer, but what ever its still a beast), but I couldn't let any one else get the leafed willy from BigSki so I scooped it up. Here is the link for any one who hasn't seen it.

starting another 1/6th Willys

He has done most of the tuff stuff, now I need to finish it up. I started finishing the grill already, drilled out the headlights, and peeled the second layer of styrene off. When I cut the head lights I had in mind what I was going to use. I decided mini mag lights would look pretty good sticking out, and boy was I right. Its not perfect as to a cj2a/ 3a but it looks pretty good, not so bug eyed. I will take a few pics here in a bit. Im pretty sure I have decided on painting this a new color as well. I like the blue that BigSki painted it in, but the grill and windshield frame do not match, and I'd like them too. So I am planning on painting it yellow, like the '05 rubicon solar yellow. I will probably pull it all apart, paint the frame and roll cage black, and probably just the very bottom of the jeep black, then paint the rest yellow. I will try and do a few detail parts in black to give it some contrast. Well for now thats it and like I said I will try to take some pics here in a bit of what I have done, and what I will do.

So I got the lights all in place and started using some putty to fill in some of the gaps. Then I filled behind the lights with epoxy... That was days ago and it is still not dry... this island is sooo humid. So once it dries I will use some more of the putty and even everything out as much as possible. Heres a few pictures of where I am and how it looks.

And heres one of both the Willy's together.

Well I am still waiting for the epoxy in the grill to dry. Its quite a bit in the two sides of the grill, I should have only done small amounts multiple times, but I never think of that and I am impatient. So once that dries, I am going to start making an electronics box for under that hood. I would like this willy to be water proof as my original is not. I also need to find some paint. So far it seems acrylic should be the best stuff to pain this type of plastic, altho it already has some paint on it so it may not matter. Ill do some more research and then buy some yellow, and some black for the roll bar and frame, and gas well.

Thanks BigSki, I have a small model shop down the street from me and they have a pretty good selection of paints. I will have to see what they have. I need to finish the grill, still some putty work to do on it, and then I want to pull it all apart and spray all the metal black, frame and roll cage, and then the rest a bright yellow.

That hobby shop down off 329 just befor max value and KFC has a HUGE Tamiya paint selection. Good military color selection for the Gundam robot models.

I hear you on rc paradise. They really don't carry much of anything anymore. I think we may be talking about the same store. Yellow building with a plane on it.....or the plane store near CoCo's?

Oh saw your jeep over by where they do the MX meeting. Im guessing your shops in that area?

Badass Willy's by the way

I'm trying to remember the color, I'm pretty sure it was Navy sky blue. I don't have the can anymore. You could take the Jeep w/ you and match the color of the cap to the body color, Tamiya paints come out very close to the cap colors.

I cant't take credit for how awesome this jeep is. BigSki started this and has done a majority of the work, especially all the hard stuff. The shop out gate 2 is call Modelers Core, its actually right on gate 2 street. And yes the 67th is right by the building they have the morning meeting at, but I'm doing CE escort this month, baby sitting local nationals while they work.
OH are you talking about the bright yellow building with a red roof, small place, they have a little tamiya stuff, models, gundam, and airsoft guns?

That is good to know. But I think I'm going to paint it yellow and black and see how it looks. If it looks terrible I will repaint. My wife says I need to paint the bottom of the body black as well as the frame and cage and I think she is right. She has a great eye for colors and good combinations, and she use to have a solar yellow TJ wrangler.

It's just threw the four corners intersection (koza music corners). It'll be on the right it's called modelers core.

I've been doing some research and found a stock yellow color on some cj3a's. Michigan yellow will be the color I try to find. Just out of curiosity have any of you used Parma faskolor on abs plastic? I have a bunch of faskolors and a few different abs bodies to paint. Would it work or be a complete waste of my time?

Saw this one in person before BigSki sold her. The chassis looked bulletproof, and it has a sweet bellcrank setup for the steering. A great start.

Build her up man!!!

Well I apologize for the slow pace on this. I have 7... yes 7 projects going... Every thing from narrowing wheels for my new summit to painting a 1/5 BMW body I have had for over a year unfinished. I have made a small amount of progress, I built an electronics tray, under the hood, but I don't know if I like it. It doesn't go with how the jeep was originally started. I also finished up the grill I only need to paint it, and then attach it to the jeep. I did connect up all the electronics need to go for a spin. It rolled around quite nicely, until, after I pulled the motor and gru apart found the pinion gear was loose. Not sure how to tighten it. I will try to make some more progress in a bit.

3rd page wow, I haven't worked on this Jeep in a long time. Been real busy with work, and lack of motivation. I got a little bit done in the last couple days, glued the grill on to the front of the jeep, and installed the johnson motor, and electronics. I am going to sell some of my projects, and other jeeps as I have too much going on. As stated in my last post I had 7 projects going, some of which I have finished. I painted the 1/5th BMW e46 cover like the NFS Most Wanted car. I will make some more upgrades as soon as I can.

Did a quick run outside and still the motor and pinion will not stay together. The motor shaft just spins in the pinion when stress is put on the drive train. I need to figure out a better way to connect the pinion to the motor, or mount a different transmission. Any one know the best way to attach this pinion to the motor, it does not have a grub screw hole nor is it large enough for one. Let me know.
