| Weakest parts?
I'm usually a traxxas fan boy, but have my eyes on the rock rey and will be buying one as a birthday present in the next couple weeks, I'm not mental but do go rough on my trucks. Are there any spares I should buy straight away just in case?

I don't have a Rock Rey, but I do have a Baja Rey, which the Rock Rey is based on (plus, to they share a number of parts). Before becoming a big proponent of Losi/TLR vehicles, I was "faithful" to Traxxas. One thing I've learned about both brands is that they share one major thing in common - they both consistently put slow, underpowered servos in their RTR vehicles. While there were other parts (rear axle, front bullhead, all three differential cups, higher viscosity oil/fluid in the shocks & differentials) needing to be replaced, the servo has always been one of the top priorities for all vehicles from both brands. Others who've had their Baja/Rock Rey's longer than I have will probably have other/additional suggestions. ~ More peace, love, laughter, & kindness would make the world a MUCH better place |

IMO the number one thing to replace is the steering bellcrank set. My rock Rey was uncontrollable at high speed till I installed this upgrade. I’ve had my rock Rey for about 5 months, and it’s had a pretty rough life running 3s, and has been stuck head on by a few traxxas rustlers driven by kids in its time. So my experience might not be representative. I’ve had a front a-arm break, two broken lower shock ends, a camber link snap in half, the steering link deform to the point of being unusable, cracks in the front bumper, and the stock servo died after a few months. A tire also popped after one too many high speed starts. There was also an outdrive shaft that somehow got bent. The internals are (IMO) very solid though. I would concentrate on upgrading or stockpiling spares of the weak plastic parts in the front of the truck. You’ll probably see a lot of posts circa 2017 suggesting that you replace the servo horn; this is less essential than it used to be. Losi added a new metal insert into the stock servo horn, it shouldn’t strip within hours as earlier owners have reported. |

You can throw a lot of more into a Rock Rey if you REALLY wanted too, but realistically it doesn't need that much to have fun with. As mentioned above, a stronger servo will definitely help with control. I found the stock tires/foams WAY too soft for my liking and going firmer on those improved high speed control and cornering significantly. Just send it, and replace what you break. Lol. Oh, get an RPM front bumper for it if you bash hard. |
