| MNRCRC 2014 Scaler Event #1 - Banning State Park - 6/14/14
Scaler GTG #1 (G6) Saturday, June 14th Banning State Park (MAP) Meet at 11am in the parking area It’s time for our first scaler event of 2014. We are going to try our hand at a G6 for the first time. Banning State Park is a great spot for us to use for this because of its natural loop, and its mix of rock & dirt. We will have to keep an eye on the weather. It looks like a chance of rain on Saturday. Something else to keep in mind with Banning is the water level. I found a site (LINK) a few years ago that shows the water level just south of where we crawl. Right now the level is at 6 feet and falling. This is 3 feet below the 9 feet it was in 2010 when we saw half the park under water. I think the water level will be fine, but hopefully things stay dry for us. Since this is our first go at a G6, let’s get everyone on the same page. A G6 is a timed event. We’re not going to score it like a regular comp. Just start the clock, drive through the gates in the intended order, then stop the clock when you cross the finish line. Quickest time wins. Something else I’ve seen other groups do is a special challenge on the course like a tire change area. I think we should put one of these on the course. We'll first take one loop as a group to layout the course, giving everyone a chance to walk the course as we create it. I don't plan to take a lot of time throwing down gates, because the intent isn't for challenging gates but rather a long course to endure. So this first lap shouldn't take too long. After this first lap, we will break off into pairs. Within each pair, one person will run the course while the other person runs the stopwatch. After the first run, everyone swaps. The second person drives while the first times. We'll stagger the starts so we're not all lumped together, but if someone catches up to you please use some courtesy and let the faster driver go past. We'll run 1.9's and 2.2's. For those who want to run both classes, we'll redo the pairings for your second run to put you with someone else running both classes. Some other items to mention… As with all our scaler events, you should plan to bring some food and water. Bug spray is also a good idea. Also consider bringing some tools and parts that you can carry with you. If you break on the course, you can repair it and continue on. You don’t want to go back to the cars to fix anything if possible. And of course with the possibility of weather, dress accordingly. Bring a rain coat if possible. In addition to the normal stuff, I’d like to ask everyone to bring two items if possible. 1) A stopwatch – one on your phone would be fine. 2) A tire wrench for the ‘special challenge’. You don’t need to have a spare tire; all we’re doing is just fully removing one tire then reinstall it. Directions from the South (MAP): Take I35 north to Sandstone(just north of Hinkley). Take exit 191 for MN23 in Sandstone. Head east on MN23. When the road starts to curve left after about a half mile, take the slight right turn onto MN123. Then turn right on Government road. Take your first left-Eagle Drive. Follow Eagle Drive till it ends. Turn right onto the gravel road-Pine Ave. *Caution-Shortly after you pass the house on the left, the road will curve left, but look like it goes right. This right actually stops at some utility building. If you take the right, just turnaround and continue right on Pine. Eventually you'll see some big boulders on the right. That's where the parking lot is. The trail we take is across from the boulders. Directions from the North (MAP): Take I35 south to exit 195, MN23. Turn right (west) onto MN23. A half mile in, you'll turn left onto MN23/Co Hwy 61. Follow this till MN123, turn left-its a sharp left. I think that's everything. See you there! Last edited by Nicklepimp; 06-10-2014 at 08:40 PM. |

Awesome. Can't wait. I say we go rain or shine. That's real off roading. Any plan for the course to have a mud pit or water hole. Just want to know if I should reinforce my waterproofing. Thanks Kevin for the info. Dana |

I would imagine that most guys are not waterproof. So we probably won't run the course through anything deeper than getting your tires wet. But there are usually spots of standing water there. If you want to submarine your rig, have at it. |

I've got a couple spots in my truck if anyone wants to commute from the metro (coon rapids to be exact). If you're close and willing to kick in a couple bucks for gas we can meet somewhere in the north metro let me know. Send me a PM Dana |

I got both classes ready and I'm bringing grunt95 along with his last minute wraith. Looks like 40-50% chance of rain in sandstone only slightly better than the metro. Bring your rain jacket.

Hey guys. Had a great time. Realized how out of shape I am when trying to run down the start path. It was good to test this out and learn for the next one. Thanks again, Dana My two rigs needing a bath when I got home. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Had a great time, and we learned a lot from this event. Our next G6 should be even better.
