second off im new to rc crawling.

so my question is, how much differnt is the scx vs the ax, in crawling situations...

Well it is like comparing apples and oranges. The SCX10 is a scale truck and the AX10 a comp truck. That being said you really cannot compare the two. If you are wanting a scale truck the SCX10 is the easiest way to go. It is a VERY capable scale rig...

Id agree with 1rc monster, they are very capable sometimes im suprised by the lines they can pull. Also they are very durable, as long as your reasonable. But if you break something there are plenty of metal parts to choose from.

Buy both, use one as a scale rig, and the other as a comp. rig
The scx uses 1.9 tires and the ax uses 2.2 and can be made to look more scale(ish)

the are lots of kit but the only thing thats gonna brake is the drive shafts axial stuff is extremely durable and i have an ax-10 and love it! its a comp truck and my friend has the scx-10 and it has smaller tires for scaleness and it crawls verry well for a scale rig and im thinking about getting one soon or doing an x-trail chassis

The SCX-10 is a very nice starting place . They can be build stock or customized .Eithr way you can't go wrong with one . Mine will have a full roll cage, sliders and bumpers . You can check it out here . Badd's K-5 Blazer
The custom work don't get started good till page 3 .
