all depends on your approach, and your time Vs money preference - i.e are you cash rich and time poor (buy kits and build, or buy RTR), or cash poor and time rich (scrounge bits here and there, build up slowly)

example - I want a tundra based lifeguard truck, but less 'blingy' than the stock highlift. Options:

1) buy tundra highlift kit. Buy tamiya MFC kit for sound effects etc. Buy accessories. Pay someone to make a rear frame for me. Buy Rapture chassis to lower the body/raise the transmission
cost - £1000+

2) buy a cheap, used roller CC01 chassis off a forum. Buy a cheap used tundra body. Use spare motor/esc lying around, or scrounge/buy used. Buy some styrene. Hack them all together.
Cost - about £100

My tendency is to go the easy route, and splash the cash. But this time I think I'm going to try route 2 first. May take longer and require patience, and it may not even work (I'm very new to this) but I'll give it a go.

And if it doesn't work? Well I'll have experience, and only lost a little money

Haha! me too. Just throw away all your receipts and anything that you spend way, way too much!

it can all add up but you just take it all one day at a time and buy what you can when you can. thats half the fun, waiting and having a project always in progress! very addictive though so be careful!

I have about $150 into mine. Bought a box full of stuff off of ebay for $250 and have been selling the parts I didn't use.

On a side note, I love this/your rig! What body is that, and who makes it, also wheels. I need to learn how to braze better to make a truggy like this! Amazing!

The body is a cut-up Parma '34 Ford truck and the wheels were Tamiya Hummer wheels. It now has a set of bare steel wheels that I have to get some rust on... (Free, I brazed up a caged bed section for a buddy and he gave me the wheels)

How scale?

If you're building something like this:

then be prepared to drop a couple grand. Little stuff adds up quick. There's probably a hundred bucks just in the brass.

On the other hand, an X-Trail can be built up for next to nothing:

Not nearly as awesome, but it's a great performer. The FJ40 rolls over if you look at it funny. This thing sticks to the walls.

I have about 1000+ into mine. Bought it on eBay for 400-chassis, body, wheels and tires, axles servo, tranny, motor, proline accessories. Had to buy radio and receiver, new coils up front, shocks, ESC with BEC, battery, charger, the list goes on. To answer your question, how ever much you want.

Buying a used scaler is definitely a way to save some money. I picked up a K-5 blazer scaler a year or so ago for much less than it would have cost for me to build it.

I have since built three different other scalers and have anywhere from 100 bucks to 200 bucks in them. I buy most of my parts used from the classifieds section and that helps me save a ton.

My CC01 H3, I've probably got $500 in it, after the Pajero kit + bearings + motor + battery, then the H3 body was $70 after shipping, $60 for the wheels, and who knows what other odds and ends.

And t's nowhere close to done...
