Does your steering cut out under load?
Does your stuff get really hot?
Are you comping your rig?
Are you running LiPo? (I know you aren't just being thorough)

If you answered all those with a No then you can probably hold off for a bit. I am no expert but that is the response I got from others on the forum.

I would put a BEC on any crawler. They're only $20 and with just the stress they take off the ESC, it's money well spent.

Default Need

I still say no. The key word being NEED. Should you have one yes, considering how much this hobby costs and a good BEC only being 20$ are you silly not to, probably. But lots of people run low power rigs with a good ESC for years with no problem. As far as I can tell that means the answer to NEED is still no. The answer to should you probably have one is yes, but the question was NEED, not should.
As for which one... Castle Creations.

If you look at the question that way, then he doesn't "need" a crawler either. You can not get the most out of your servo using the BEC from the ESC. Under load, it will stall.
