Default new servo, can i get by without a BEC?

Just picked up a savox 1283SG. It pushes 416.6 oz @ 6V. Im wondering if I will need to get a BEC to for my ridgecrest to run proper. Also, I don't fully understand what a bec is or how it works or how to hook one up if I get one. I have searched around a bit but I'm still kind of in the dark about it. Thanks!

An external BEC is like a power supply for your servo. This reduces the load on the internal BEC in your speed controller, which allows the ESC to run cooler and supply ample power to your reciever, preventing glitching or brownouts. It also ensures that your servo recieves all the power it wants.

Make sure you reprogram the BEC with a Castle link. I think it only comes set at 5.0 volts.

Yes, you always need a BEC. Really though, they're cheap enough and they'll make sure your electronics get the juice they need. Savoxs are amp hungry beasts from what I've heard. I've got either the 1230 or 1231 in my Wraith wired directly to a CCBEC, no issues so far.

Basic rule of thumb is...."If ~200inoz+ torque output, get an external BEC".

If you're running a high voltage servo & 2S LiPO, you can direct wire power to the servo.

It's a good $20 upgrade regardless what servo you have! IMO

all my friends and i run the hitec 7955TG servo and dont use an external BEC.. if you get a battery that has a high C rating you dont need a BEC.. granted these hitec servo's only put 333oz of torque.

im running an ax10 with rooster crawler esc, sr300 receiver, dx3e radio and a hitec 7955TG servo and no problems... the odd glitch once in a while but nothing heartbreaking..

Alright got it hooked up and did a few cookies in the garage and there seems to be no glitches. But other than glitches, is there any risk of hurting anything by not running a bec? I still plan on getting one but probably won't be able to till next week.

I don't agree. Using an amp hungry servo on an internal bec can burn up the internal bec.

Just running a truck around a garage floor is not a real test. The majority here are telling you to get a BEC so just spend the extra $20, you will not be dissapointed.

Lol I know it's not. It was just a quick 30 second test to make sure it worked. I am definitely gonna get one, but will have to get the link because it only comes set at 5.1V. So its gonna be a week before I can spend 40 for both. Guess I'm gonna have to hang her back up for another week lol. One thing after another on this dang thing lol.... Hobbies.... Money pits. *Shakes head* lol

Having the Castle Link is a good thing since it can also program your ESC.
However, if you can't afford both the CCBEC and the CL, the HeyOK No Brainer BEC is an option. It comes with a fixed voltage that you specify when you order it and is plug and play if you are using Deans connectors.
No Brainer BEC

You can order a CC BEC from Holmes Hobbies set to whatever voltage you want.

Long term, yes, get a Castle Link.

I'm guessing the bec should be set to the same volts the servo pulls right? Or should it be the same as my battery?
