what is styrene how strong is it and what can I use it for

It's a type of plastic, people normally use it for making interiors like seats, dash's, floor boards, and other scale stuff. The micro guys use it to make chassis and other stuff since the micro's don't put to much weight and strain on the styrene. And for how strong it is, I have no idea. I haven't used any on my 1.9 scaler yet. But, if you make bond the joints right it can be pretty tough.

Some use it for non-essential bits and pieces. Coolers, grills, shovels,...etc.
Some use it to modify hard bodies, usually thicker for exteriors. I think if you search 'styrene' here or take a look at 'The Chop Shop' you'll see some good examples.

I have done a ton of stuff with styrene, its easy to sand and bend. The possibilities are endless, just get some CA glue
