Default Tire foams

Hey guys (and ladies) I am new to Comp crawling and was wondering if anybody can steer me in the direction of how to pick foams for my tire. I know all rigs are different but am looking for a place to start. I have a 5th D chassis, Titanium links, XR10 axles, and Traxus shocks. So far I have tried a bunch of tires and have settled on JConcepts Ruptures with the fronts having the sidewalls shaved. I can't get any where near the same traction other guys running the same tire get. They easily climb stuff I can't even come close to. I understand suspension tuning is also possibly an issue but They all say it feels pretty good. I will apreciate the help. Thanx

How much does the rig weigh? how tall are the tires? Crawler Innovations will be the foams you'll want to get.

The rig is just over 5 lbs and tires are 5 3/4 aproximately. Some of the guys are running dual density and others run a closed cell and others run tuning rings. I get the concept of the closed cell and tuning rings but where do I start? I would rather not dump tons of money on foams that don't work. Am I better erring on the softer side, then getting tuning rings to dial it in? Or is it better to start out slightly harder?

Sounds like a place to start. CI has so many choices it's both good and bad if you are not sure wheree to start. Thanks Crawler Nut

That's the nature of the beast. You'll be forever tweaking and trying new stuff to stay competitive. The foams crawler nut recommended will get you going in the right direction though. And don't discount the effect of breaking-in your tires and foams, they will get better over time.

So, crawler nut, I'm about to order these. Only after it's confirmed they're what c n suggested.

This will be a start.

See this thread:

Air 2.2 Tires

Call CI today sometime - They will ask you details of your rig and recommend the best for your situation. This is by far the best solution for you because they know their products.

Typically, the choices you list are often their recommendation IF you are running 2.2 wheels/tires. You haven't said what wheels you have. If they are 1.9 wheels/tires, you should look at Lil' Novas.

Softer up front, firmer in the rear for best crawling performance.

I crawl on multiple surfaces and what I found works great for me ate the pitbull dual stage foam. Just my opinion

Didn't see any mention of starring the foam. I can see up and downsides to this. But I am new to crawling. Don't even own one yet. Have other shapes been used? Seems blocks would be more consistent? Anywho, it's probably been covered but I haven't come across it yet. Thought it should be mentioned here too. Is it legal in comps?

The Gmade Air System tires are really bouncy when they are holding air.
Cool looking but being bouncy isn't so good for crawling. And there is the holding air thing too ....

Cutting the foams into a star shape was a pre-memory foam thing. No cutting required with a good set of CI foams.

5.5 CI CC comp Cut inner soft outter front, Rear CI CC standard inner med outter is my normal foam set-up for my white dot rover tires on 1" wheels.
I've recently switched to Voodoo pin silver tires. Voodoo's are taller then Rovers so started with foam set-up as above but added the tuning rig because of the height difference... wasn't happy with it to bouncy.
I'm now trying CI CC comp Cut inner medium outters foams front, Rear CI CC standard inner and medium outter foams (no tuning rings)
My rig weighs 4.10oz ish berg comp crawler. my point is crawler innovations foams are the way to go IMO.

Would the rebound from the tires not help in some situations? Seems like another tuning option much like changing the foams, only more precise if you can actually adjust pressure accurately. Not trying to be a jerk, I signed up to learn and converse constructively. Thanks for the response!

It was hard to get the tires inflated to where you could get decent performance and it didn't last very long due to the tires losing air. I spent more time messing around with the tires than crawling while I had them.

Do a search and you can find others that had similar experiences with the Air system tires.
