Default Why do RTR's come with NiMH batteries?

With so many people using lipo's these days, why do manufacturers still include NiMh batteries and trickle chargers? Seems like a waste of money on the manufacturer's part, waste of product and potential extra cost to the consumer too. Lipo's don't seem to be much more money and a better fast charger is not that much more either it seems.

I believe NiMh and trickle chargers are way cheaper to produce than a lipo with a matching balance charger. Also lipos are volatile because of their chemical makeup, just my 2 cents.

Most of the electronics in rtr's are bargain basement items that meet a minimum requirement to make the vehicle do what they are supposed to do. That's kind of why kits exist, you don't buy the parts that you know you won't use, for a slight discount over the rtr cost. Lipo's also take a little more attention to care in order to last and be safe, where many people buy rtr's because they've never had an rc before and want to be up and running as easily as possible. Nimh's are stupid easy to care for without having to take night classes to learn how to charge them. Balance port charges surely minimize the thinking involved with charging a lipo, but they are also slow, and then you'd be asking why it didn't include a 200w charger and 150c lipo's.

I agree. It comes down to economics and profit margins.

There is also the safety/liability consideration. Lipos require a little bit more care and feeding than NiMH, and tend to me more energetic when they get upset.

Yeah, a friend of mine was charging a lipo in his motorhome on a road trip and lost the entire motorhome, along with second degree burns on his right arm. That doesn't happen with nimh's

Yeah ... I wouldn't trust a 12 year old with Lips.

Lipo's also require special notice when shipping - nicads do not. I'm not sure how that factors in cost-wise, but I'm sure it's a factor.

I don't mind them coming with my stuff because I know they will work & almost last forever unlike the more picky & volatile lipos. I got a fatshark setup and I made the mistake of trying it without charging the LIPO and that's all it took to kill it. I have also left ones plugged in and its over then too.

The Traxxas Slash that I just got came with a 7 cell NIHM! Wooooooooooooooo! Upgrade! And runs pretty quick surprisingly. The chargers are absolute garbage.

But what I REALLY hate are the proprietary plugs.

NIHMS are fine :they are stalwarts and serve a function in that regard.
