| BWD Phantom Build
Needed a new basher like I needed another hole in my head.... Anyway picked up a donor rustler over on a different forum for cheap. Tore it all down and started putting this sucka together. Nothing real fancy as it is just going to be beat to kingdom come so I'll replace parts as needed. It's fairly self-explanatory. Here is it together for the most part. The upper chassis is currently no mounted to the bottom as I'm still working on the steering setup. Still working out some ideas in my head on how to setup the steering. douglastee had the idea of doing a "suicide" setup but there really isn't room to mount both ends of the steering links to the end of the servo horn. I may have had a bad design though. I would also thing that the IFS would cause some issues torquing on the horn and such. Anyway I have a set of beatup badlands that will go on it for now. Dropping a Castle Sidewinder and 4-Pole 4600 into it as well. The Grand Plan calls for some panels...thinking X-wing fighter like panels. |

Man, talk about a one off frame! lol, like it is thought out and built for the job with a dash of style! Thats the Basher you are waiting for! On to the servo, how about different shaped horns: a T shape? |

Getting in a battery, how long of a batt will fit approximately? Do you mount the ESC next to the battery? How wide is the widest point on chassis and what is the height of the kit? |

I've got this same kit - I'm running the Traxxas VXL system with a Venom 2c lipo - it's a shorter lipo so it fits just right. I'm holding off on finishing mine until Don puts up the instructions. He's been a tad busy lately so no worries. Keep us posted as o how you set up your steering! Cheers, Doc |

I flipped around the servo mount so that the point in which the horn attaches to the servo was in the middle of the two vertical posts. I found a longer servo horn and a cross style horn and bolted them together. Still need to trim up the ends of the cross mount so that the ends of the steering rods don't bind up. Also will need to secure the cross piece a bit better so it doesn't rotate. Granted I'm still eagerly awaiting Don's build instructions just to see how he ended up solving the steering setup. Updated the servo horn a bit to prevent any unneeded twisting. Also placed the electronics and battery. Still need to work on wire management and get some panels on it. Oh and dig out some wheels. ;) Last edited by TraceTheDog; 02-10-2013 at 04:39 PM. |

Nice servo horn mod! Also great use of the electronics box... I've got one sitting around from my Wraith kit - great idea. I was trying to stuff my esc, etc in behind my lipo and wasn't having much luck. This is still sitting in a box right now - my wife says one RC at a time and I have my Wraith to finish, then Tuna Fish, then the phantom!!! Btw, what wheels are you thinking of? I'm just using the stock TR wheel/tire combo that was on mine. Cheers, Doc |

Not 100% decided on wheels yet I have to dig in the bin. I have a set of wheels that have some bald badlands. Or I may just end up making a set using PVC and some vp hubs. I hear ya about too many builds going on. I'm trying to get this one done before my International CXT shows up! |

^^^ PVC to make your own wheels?!?!?? Please enlighten... what PVC piece do you start with? And just thinking out loud, but with some sand paddles this could be a SWB FOFF... maybe? (Shoulder shrug emoticon needed) Cheers, Doc |

On the receiver box I had to trim off the posts on the bottom. Also trimmed off one of the screw holes on the lid to make the box more "rectangle" if that makes sense. I removed the back corner vertical brace and slid the box right in. It actually wedges right into the main vertical pieces quite well. I'll eventually put down some thin servo tape or carpet tape so it doesn't slide around and work itself out. For the wheels check out this thread. I've done a few pairs now using that method. I have some pics in my albums here in rcc. Really opens up the options for offsets. Drill press rim mod's with VP hubs Last edited by TraceTheDog; 02-15-2013 at 05:32 AM. |

Trace... Thanks for the tips on the receiver box! And I read through the DIY wheel thread - that's awesome. Not sure if I have the time/skills to devote to building something like that, but way cool indeed! Cheers, Doc |

wow the wheelbase is super short on it. looks bad ass tho!! I think BWD should make a loooong WB version of this chassis. then you could use 1/8 scale parts. nice work on the build. |
