Default Doug Thorley's - Chevy 2 Much!

Well the old drag car addiction is working overtime! Here is my attempt to build the "grandfather" of the Funnycar. It was classified a match race car in the early '60's and was very successful. I am going to try to build it close to the original although it has been "recreated" I am building the front suspension as the original. The front has a single transverse sprung straight axle. The following are the inspiration photo, my body assembly, lots to do yet, and the chassis - at least getting it to roller status. Wheels are on back order so these are the mock up set.

I feel so inadequate. This looks amazing. Can't wait to see the end.

Are you saying this thread makes you feel inadequate, or were you just making a statement? Hehe..

Yes, this is pretty awesome!

Thanks gentlemen! Greatly appreciate the kind and funny words! Pretty sure this is an addiction! So anyway, finished installing the front shocks then jumped back on the body. Cut and roughly shaped the hood, mocked up and finished the trunk w/hinges. Added the drip rails and finished the front and rear roof edges. Now tons of final shaping, sanding and filler to get under way.

I will! Thanks! Without Nankin my builds wouldn't happen, well may take a lot longer, but you guys stock a good portion of my building needs!

That front axle is making me antsy to build my own. What are you using for the knuckles?

They are HR Racing Traxxas Slash option front hubs.

"FUGLY".....that's what call this stage of the build. The "Chevy 2 Much" has received its first application of filler. I added a photo of the filler I use if anyone is curious. This body has some cool curves that are hard to see in the pics, but the fender and quarter panel top leading edge, curves down from the vertical to where they meet the hood and deck lid. At least the photos of a real Chevy II show that detail so I tried to mimic them here. So, after an hour or two, that coat of filler has been sanded and a second had been applied. Subsequent pics show it after sanding. I started the headlight bezels, a little more challenging that I was anticipating! Got both sides shaped and re-arched the leading edge of the fenders to match the radius of the bezels. Got the steering servo mounted (its a Hitec HS85 micro servo) and the chassis back together, realigned the rear 4 link, now its more parallel to the frame rails. Waiting for the trans so I can mock up the trans mount and move on to the engine.

Here it is with its initial coat of primer/surfacer. I borrowed the set of wheels and tires from the Falcon for the photos as the set fro the Chevy is still on back-order. Front will sit a bit higher when its finished.

Got around to building the motor cover, based it on the tribute Chevy 2 Much engine, rat motor, injector stacks, breathers in the valve covers kinda like the photo, just not as polished as the photo. And mounted the trans/motor assembly. Still have a ton of detail to add to the engine.

After sanding and re-priming the body I jumped back on the engine details. Installed the oil pan, fab'd the headers using 3/16" solid styrene rod. Added the timing cover and fuel pump, added a few cooling inlets and outlets.

Well, fresh from the paint booth, (my garage!) no wet sanding done yet, is the "Chevy 2 Much" with its as close as I could get it a candy tangerine/candy red finish. Getting that color was concerning me, sprayed out a test panel to see if I could figure out how the original builders got that color. Once done yesterday, compared to the current photo of the real car, it looks pretty close! Photos do not do it justice, the gold base color has a lot of fleck in it. Looking forward to wet sand and graphics! Also added a few more engine details, MSD distributor, coolant lines and the plug wires. Had to figure out a way to extend the rear of the frame as the SCX10 rails stopped about 3" to short. Added the truck panels. Now tons of details, interior, tin work, roll cage...........

So....I have been chomping at the bit to see what this would look like with "Chevy 2 Much" graphics, so after some rubbing-n-polishing the graphics turned out like I hoped. They're a little longer than I wanted but seem to match pretty close. Tackled the tin work in the trunk and am setting it up with a magnet body mount system.

Love the car. What are you going by for measurements? I'd like to do something time this but I may have a hard time finding a car and measuring it. If that's what your doing.

Hi, I use a side photo and then enlarge it to the scale I want, this one is approx 1:9. Then use it as a template for the styrene pattern. The rest is from reference photos, I wish I had a car to measure from!
