Default Home Made Global Rallycross Track

I'll put some finished pics in the "Rally Tracks" thread, but being a work in progress at the moment, I thought I'd start a thread.

After moving into our newly built home last year, I had quite a large nature strip (between road and house) to landscape. It's about 14.5 metres by 7.5 metres. Not huge, but enough to play with.

After most of the yards landscaping was done, I was left with a mess of old soil, rocks, weeds, etc. A couple of hours with the rake and I had a blank canvas.

This was my basic plan, after looking at various global rallycross and X-Games tracks:

And after sweeping the surface with a broom, this is my plan:

You can see the loose rocks towards the top/left of the picture. It's sweeping up ok. More:

And that's where I'm at...

That looks like very narrow lanes to try n race on. May be an issue. Good initiative man.

That's a good idea. Aren't GRX tracks run on mixed surfaces? That would allow for wider lanes which would encourage passing. And with some clever planting it would make the track look more 'garden-y' which would help keep the HOA off your back.

GRC tracks in the US are mainly on tarmac. In the UK and rest of the world it is a pretty even mix, if not a little dirt/grass biased.

US tracks are done on race tracks, while many UK rally cross is run on dedicated rally cross tracks.

also If the lane is too narrow for side by side racing and passing try a ROC lay out.

Race Of Champions

I think all of your comments is stuff I was thinking of - sorry, in my opening post I said X-Games. It was the Race of Champions that I had googled. Hence the 2 straights side by side and the cross over jump in the middle. So the theory is that 2 cars might start on each straight next to each other so their effectively race on different parts of the track - just like ROC. Maybe I need to change my thread title to "ROC track"

My initial plan was to make the track 1.5metres wide, but I just couldn't get any detail into the layout, so scaled it down to 1m wide. Still alot better than the 50cm the European guys run on, running behind their cars... The grids on the paper drawing are 0.50m squares.

After doing my sweeping with the broom, I thought about the pathway too. As you say, GRC is on mixed surfaces. The dirt is just swept at the moment, so can easily be changed. Probably no reason why I can't use the concrete driveway either. That's another 5m across!

Finished all the sweeping and raking of the track. For the moment I've decided to keep the track within the confines of the dirt - not going onto the path/driveway. But there is currently no boundary, so I can run wide.

A couple of jumps along the two main straights

The cross over section. Maybe a jump here later too

Had my first outing with a Short Course Buggy. It was way too big and powerful for the track. I should be able to get the rally car out there sometime soon. The track is still very bumpy and rocky in some spots so not ideal just yet.

I wish I had you as a neighbor, I'd love to have a rally track like that.
Looks good so far.

Minor update. The grass is growing in the infield sections and lane dividers. Will help keep the lanes in tact when the kids (and me) constantly drive over them!

Um, have you looked at any ROC, GRC tracks or WRC stages lately. One good thing about rally cars - they go straight, up, down AND around corners.

But thanks

Considering I didn't put the extra kink in the top right of my sketched diagram, I'd say I'm pretty much spot on.

That's ROC, not GRC, isn't it? So, of course those would be R8s.

Correct on all counts

Pretty sure this particular one is from the RoC in Germany 2011.
