| Re: GD-600 gear reduction on clod axles Update
I have put the truck through hell the past few weekends and the gear reductions have held up perfectly. I have no complaints or have had problems whatsoever. The current gear ratio is 114 to 1 which has worked out very well. The run time is average 25 minutes. Even under extreme crawling conditions the motors stay very cool. It was worth all the effort.

How's the steering with the wheels pushed so far out? Like it? |

Hey aubie, that's awesome!!!! Never thought using the gd-600 unit on a clod was even possible b/c of clearance!!! Thanks for proving me wrong!! Could you show some articulation shots...like 2 pics with the axle flexed each direction showing the motor clearance? I know you said you get ~85degrees of articulation but pics would help to see the angles better. My next crawler will be a clod and I'd love to use 2 of these rather than those pricey TTR pieces! Again, GREAT WORK!!!! |

Jason, There are no problems with steering and I do like the extra width but it can be a bit of a problem in narrow places. Cman Here are a few pics. The motor sticking out does limit articulation but overall it hasnt been a problem. I have made some changes to the truck since I first built it. I have lowered the side frames 1 1/2 inches which has helped with the CG and I have also lowered the body, after alot of remarks about it being a bit too high . I had to chop it up a little bit but overall I like it. If the frame changes work out well over the next couple of weekends. I plan on having a new main chassis machined. Heres the original design of the truck. Now after the redesign. |

Thanks for the pics Aubie! I can see now how you've done it. The bottom links are mounted below the axles so that helps out in clearing the motor. You lose a bit of ground clearance doing this vs. mounting the links above the axle but I have seen alot of clods set up their bottom links this way and crawl VERY well despite. Furthermore you can now gear as low as you could ever want! Awesome! Great work! You've definitely given me something to look forward to when I build up a clod someday! Everyone was saying to mount the body lower but DAAAAAMN!!! That's ULTRA LOW! Looks good! Definitely looks more rock-crawler'ish! |
