Default Yup, you've guessed it...

...another buildup thread. This clod is finished, I'm just typing it up whenever I get the time.

So I'd had an old bullhead since I was little, and I typed in bullhead in Google to see what would come up. Predictably, the results were mostly people selling wall mounted bull heads. Eventually, I discovered that the clodbuster was exactly the same thing as the bullhead, so I typed that in, and guess what website I found. Yup. You've guessed it. Anyway, I was looking at the rigs in the "Rock clod gallery" and I thought to myself, I could one of them, easy... My initial design was a stick, as it looked so damn simple and easy to make. Then I thought about the severe lack of rocks in English fenland. Hmmm... So I settled on a 4link design of some sort, but forgot about it for a while. But a few weeks later I passed a model shop in Cambridge, and wombled in for a look. I spotted a set of rod ends that I thought looked suitable (how wrong I was to be) and bought them, along with some threaded rod. I fabbed up a chassis of sorts, and tried it with the MSC. On the first bit of articulation, the axle flipped and broke all of the links. Bummer.

LOL! Just so you know, that's an old design. It had a huge wheelbase and fell apart at the first trundle round the garden.

Anyways, I decided an entirely new design was in order. I pondered on it for a while, and came up with a design not dissimilar to the NN. I ordered a set of Traxxas rod ends, and mounted them on beefy links cut from 1/4" aluminium.

A few days later I was talking to a freind about my project, when I remembered that he used to have a Kyosho tracker. When I asked if he still owned it, he replied "Yeah, you want it?". "Well, I suppose I could take it off your hands", I replied . I got it home and had a look at the thing. It didn't work, which was down to the MSC. I replaced this with an ESC from a model boat, which left me with 3 servos: 1 from the clods steering, 1 from the clods MSC, and 1 from the trackers MSC. So I ended up with a 3 servo steering setup, 2 on the front, 1 on the back, brought together by 2 y-harnesses.

I then transplanted the trackers oil shocks into the clod springs, and narrowed the tyres. I put the MOPED ESC in a tupperware box, along with the reciever and the majority of the wiring.

Finally, today I fabricated a lid for the chassis, instead of a body. But, I broke a servo horn and one of my crappy bits of soldering. Oh well...

Cheers

Well it's better then the first build. Needs some better tires. The chassis looks good.

Looks good, but why do you have to front servos?

Thanks, I have two front servos because it gives more steering power, without having to buy high-torque servos. Stronger links? Have you seen the size of the main front link? As there aren't many rocks around here I intend to fit Imex all-ts

Cheers 8-)

In the last picture the servo is mounted at an angle, not like the front servo's. Why is that?

It's mounted at an angle to reduce the angle the links would be at, as the link needed to be mounted at the top of the servo, or else crab steer everywhere.

2 servos on the rear and one on the front? How does that work, did you need more steering in the rear? Just curious Second design looks much better btw!

The suspension links or the steering links? Anyway, they are both made from the same stuff. 1/4" aluminium plate, cut into strips, with Traxxas rod ends.

The 2 servos in the back are there purely for more steering torque, and are joined by a y-harness. It would work with one, but better with 2.

Cheers 8-)

haha I see, you must have a stronger servo in the front then. Sounds cool. Are you running a reciever pack to power all those servos?

No, I just get less power to the front at the moment. I'd like a more powerful servo in the front though, but alas, not enough money. As for the reciever pack, not at the moment but I probably will do as my runtimes are starting to suck.

As for a high torque servo, what do you think of this?

For a clod, you need something with more like 180oz+ of torque, that only has 132oz

Hmmm.. I don't know. I might just leave it as it is, with just a lid.
