| TLT All Chopped Up for 1.9 class
My tlt axles have been just laying in a box for awhile, so after seeing Nluvwithxlr8ing's 1.9 build I couldn't resist. Parts: Tamiya TLT axles Axial transmission MaxAmps 1100mah 7.4volt Lipo Panther Cougars cut down to 1.9 specs HPI 26mm wide 1.9 wheels Integy 55T Lathe motor, until I can get a Holmes Hobbies Cobalt Puller 500 Hitec 7955TG servo Nomadio React For now the shocks will be HPI rally shocks Jato driveshafts with stampede metal U-joints I followed Nluv's instructions here: HOW TO: Narrow TLT & Bruiser Axles with one difference. I am using MIP CVD's in the front and RC4wd Stainless Steel axles in the rear. The process is very easy, especially if you have access to some power tools. Down to 8" width with the wide hexes. It can go down to 7.5" with the narrow set of hexes (which I can't seem to find anywhere). Last edited by SVEN; 11-20-2008 at 10:52 PM. |

Thanks guys. The thing I like most about these axles for a 1.9 build is that they are kinda overkill in the axle strength department. As a 2.2 I was always breaking and upgrading. Now that these axles are pretty well upgraded, I don't forsee any strength issues as a 1.9. I had originally planned to use an L-trail chassis from the Crawler Store, but that didn't really work with the Axial transmission and the width that I wanted (2" wide). I got to playing around with a GC1 chassis and the holes line up well for these short shocks and a nice angle. I don't like laying shocks down, as the suspension acts wierd for me. The link geometry took a while to get straightened out, as there is not a whole lot of room to work with. And now that everything is offset a bit from narrowing one side, it just made it that much more fun to work with. I first tried the lower links in the triangulated configuration seen in the pictures, along with the top links in a parallel config (like the GC1). But the axle wobbled more than I would like, so I came up with what you see here for the tops. I had to remove one of the servo mount tabs on the back of the axle in order to place the upper links where I wanted them. Hopefully 3 screws will be enough to keep the servo in place. Little bit of flex, this is only the front. Now that the front suspension is over with, the rear should be a piece of cake. I just have to find another losi triple-x buggy to steal some tie rods from. |

do you have any binding between that upper link and the drive shaft?

Look at the first picture, the uppers don't come near the drive shaft. The lowers however, are pretty close at full extension, but nothing touches throughout the flex. It's not perfect, but just like any new truck, it is a rough draft. It will only get better with time, testing, and tuning. Last edited by SVEN; 11-09-2008 at 11:54 AM. | |

Got some electronics thrown in. I used a spare GC1 skidplate as an electronics plate. The receiver and FX-R sit on top with the battery mounted underneath. |

Steven... could you send me a link to where you found those wheels please? How did you make the groove in your axle for the clip? I was thinking about maybe a drill press and a scribe??? I have everything I need to build one except the guts to cut up my TLT axles |

wheels.........http://www.tcscrawlers.com/1.9-Sized...p-1-c-277.html Not bad looking Steven.. I went and cut up my other side, which gave me a 5.5" WMS.. same as the Losi |

Aw come on Jeremy, you gonna make me do the other side aren't you? That turned out great. I'll run mine through some gates this weekend to see if I want to go narrower. Is the 5.5" with the wide CVD hex? I got the rear set up and started working on the new body (mini Rock Grappler). Only problem with the truck is it's about 3/4" too long. I'll be making a trip to the hobby shop tomorrow to find some links. If not, then I'll be going to Lowes for some all-thread. Some updated shots... |

I didn't make any grooves, since the axle is pinned into the differential I didn't see a need to use a clip. Where the clip would go, I put a small O-ring to take up the slack and keep the bearing from moving. If you have a dremel (with cutoff wheel) and a drill, you can chuck the axle into the drill. Then just run the drill in the reverse direction from the dremel and gently cut the slot with the cutoff wheel. On a similar note, to cut my axles evenly, I chucked my axle into a drill and ran it backward through a bandsaw (with metal cutting blade). Worked very well, looked like they were parted on a lathe. Steven, with the wider hexes, it measures around 5 7/8 -6"..Can't remember exactly. I actually cut mine further in, than what Brandon did in his writeup. My axles were cut here(pic below) on both sides. Then grinded the excess down flush. I actually cut 3/4" from each side(from end of axle housing, not including the axle c/kingpin pieces) BTW- sorry to hijack your build thread. I'll stop now |

So I'm not an RC crawler from way back... I just happen to have some TLT axles. However, mine have C's that look like they are a molded part of the plastic axle housing. What are these and where do you get them? I see them on every set of TLT axles that are under a serious crawler. Thanks |

Some action photos from yesterday's comp. We didn't run the 1.9 class, but I got to run it around with sddill's losi mrc. I need to get some different front shocks that are not so stiff, currently thinking some MLST shocks. The 2 cell lipo was way to slow with the 55t motor, so I ran it with a 3 cell. I need to get a lower turn motor so that I can use the 1.9 comp legal 2 cell lipo. Last edited by SVEN; 11-16-2008 at 01:45 PM. |

New motor came in today, I can't wait to get it mounted up. Looks like I may have to trim the chassis a lil bit. |
