Default Need more power

Running 55 turn Lathe /84 spur gear/stock TLT pinion gear/stock bushings

Should I start off with smaller pinion gear and metal bearings first?

Don't need more wheel speed, looking for more low end tork.

Get bearings first. That helps a lot in reducing friction and drag on all the parts. Then, if you want more torque you need to go with a much smaller pinion. Start with a 12-14 and see how it is. A 55t on 6 cells with 12/87 is suprisingly faster than you would think. Not blistering, but not a sloth either.

Ace, what driveshafts did you use? If you run the Maxx shafts and large yokes, you'll only get an 84T spur gear to fit.
I run a 48 pitch 84 tooth spur gear and this pinion:

and I get good torque out of the setup.

BTW, look for a good deal on those bearings. I cant really tell a difference between the expensive ones and the cheap ones. I think HobbyTown sells them for $0.99 each. If I remember correctly, you need 11 5mm bearings.

Ace, is this a stock TLT tranny, or something else?

I don't know if you are talking about the trans or the axles but I know you need 20 - 5x11mm bearings for the TLT axles and you need 6 - 5x11mm bearings for a stampede trans.

With the Maxx yokes? Did you have to trim them much? Got a picture.

Yep Maxx yokes, Pede tranny, and an 87 tooth spur gear. I didn't have to trim them at all. I'll post a pic when I get back to my house if you don't believe me. I've got 2 trucks like this. I've got a 90 tooth on my JrX2 tranny on my TS stick with pedes.

This is my 2.2 LTL crawler. Still bushings for now. Revo shafts. Graupner 2.8 gear reduction with a Novak 4300 brushless. and stock gear box with 12 tooth with E-max 72 tooth gear. This set up has enough torque to lift both front wheels off the ground. Untill you strip the belt. (Pede tranny on its way) If your looking for tork brushless is the way to go.

After bearings, brushless is definatly the way to get more power. There are a few solutions out there, from the new novak system coming out (maybe in a few months) to outrunner motors of all sizes. Mamba 25 esc's work well in crawlers as they go slow and dont need much power.

What new Novak system comming out? do you have any specs on it? I like the 4300 because its the slowest one novak makes(that I know of) is the new one another super fast like the 4.5 or 5.5 of slow?

novak crawler system, tested and tweaked by Microgoat of this forum.

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/?&I=LXNJA0 A bit heavy and pricey for my comp crawler tastes, but would make one helluva scale/ bash rig motor. I plan on getting some for testing and selling as soon as they are available.

I've got the Super sport 5800 in my TLT basher. I LOVE it. With 15/87 gearing it's still got enough TORQUE (not tork) to ride on the tailgate.

It's not that I dont believe you, just that mine will not fit anything larger than an 84T spur. I'd like to see a pic of yours...maybe it is setup a bit different than mine.

I'm running an Associated 87 tooth. Try it, it'll fit. I bet there's, 1/8" left between the gear and the Maxx yoke. I'll get a pic up here in a few days. I'm house sitting now and my cam and truck are a little too far away. I won't forget about ya.
