Default GD-600

O.K. people,
I could use your help once again, I just have a few question's.
I ordered my GD-600 today and I'm wondering if I use a nine tooth pinion on both the motor and the GD-600 ? And what's this I hear about drilling the pinion or turning down the shaft on the GD-600. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank's in advance,chuck

You need to turn down the shaft on the GD-600 so the pinion will
fit. If you are runing a txt use a 9 tooth on the GD and a 15-20
on the motor.

Ya don't drill out a 9t pinion.

The easiest way to turn down the shaft is to mount the motor to the gear reduction put it into a vise and then hook a battery to it. Then take a file and hold it to on the shaft. Grind away until you can fit the 9 tooth pinion onto the shaft.

ya the file trick works but it ain't pretty. I did that to mine and it won't spin true which doesn't give you the best gear mesh but it's been working. You might be able to convince DUDE to make you one for some $.

it'll look like this

Not 100% sure what size the GD-600's output shaft is, but would these work for those not wanting to turn the shaft? They come in 4 and 5mm.

THE 11T MIGHT BE WORTH IT.

The motor pinion for the GD600 is 48p or 48p metric, not sure. You can get pinions from Kyosho for the GD600 though. On the output shaft, you can use anything you want. TXT gearing is 32P

I just instillated mine. I went with drilling out the pinion, and I used one of the stock 15 tooth pinions. (In case something went wrong, I had a spare)
I used a 3/16s drill bit, and it was too small by a hair. I hooked up a motor and battery to the GD600 and filed just a little off the shaft.
I have a 18 tooth pinion on the motor (supplied).
I haven't tried any other gear combonation, but it still has some good wheel speed.
Less wheel speed than a Mag Mayhem with a 9 tooth pinion, obviously.

I do want to try higher numerical pinions, to see when too high, is too high.
(Edit: I meant lower pinions...bah, I should reread sometimes!)

I picked mine up yesterday, and have a couple questions. I'd like to be in the ballpark as far as the output side goes, so I'm not wasting money on pinions. I tried drilling out an 18t last night, and it came out really bad. Slightly crooked afterwards, and tightening the setscrew totally knocked it out of whack. So, I'd like to get the ones I referenced above, and they're $15 a pop, so....
With an 18t (stock) on the motor, my gearing choices range from 165.5:1 (21t) to 316:1 (11t), depending on which pinion I put on the output shaft.
I also have an 13t for the motor, which gives me 229.2:1 to 437.5:1.
Without gear reduction, I was running 151:1 with a 9t pinion.
Should I pick a happy medium, such as 14t for the output shaft, and adjust from there on the motor? What are you guys running, on both sides, most commonly. I'm not sure I want to go as slow as Wheels does though.
Second, how are you guys mounting these to the motor plate? I can either use my crappy rotary tool (NOT a dremel) to clearance it, or use spacers. The only problem I see with clearancing the plate is the screw in the middle of the plate for the spur gear shaft. With spacers, I'm not positive the pinion would have enough grip on the shaft.

I think your math is a bit off.

for example this is mine

9t pinion/40t spur ratio is 4.44 x
TXT tranny ratio is 6.37 x
GD600 ratio 2.5 x
TXT axle ratio is 2.0=

crawl ratio is 141.4:1

Hmm, I thought tranny ratio was 17:1. I guess that includes the stock motor ratio (40/15=2.67) as well (17/2.67=6.37). Ok. Well, that still leaves me with the same question. The smallest 5mm pinion I can get is 11t. Maybe I'll do that, and keep the GD at 2.5 and go from there. I just don't want to go TO slow. For now, I'm going to go with one stock silver can.

that will work ok. remember I'm running a 55t lathe motor. so it slows it down a lot.

I used my dremel to open up the hole in the motor plate. Not sure about other guys but I can't change the pinion size in the tranny the way mines setup. I'd have to re-mount the crawlbox.

I used a hobby knife to carve down the ring on the reduction unit, then I file to clean it up a little. It wasn't too pretty, but you never see it when it is bolted up to the tranny.

I used a knife too. The plastic cuts very easily. Just widdled it really.

Thanx for posting those reduction figures rckjeep! I was wondering about it since I have the GD-600 now, I was just too lazy to do the research!

No problem, it's very useful info. I think Kona Joe is the guy I got the excel spreadsheet from.

I use a lathe, no gear removell and looks like a stock motor shaft.
They will be available when paypal is finished, I have a good stock now of new turned shafts.
