Well, got the rig running. I was crawling around on my rockpile but the motor started getting hot (too hot to touch). I let it cool down and then tried moving it but the ESC kept going into "drivetrain bind" mode. Took it apart and found the RC4WD 4:1 reduction unit had seized the front output. That was only after about 5 minutes of crawling. So, I took it apart, polished the shaft, reamed the bushing and got it working again. Reinstalled the motor and GRU and then stripped out the plastic spur gear on the tranny. Just ordered an aluminum 87 tooth gear.

So right now, I'm running the Novak Crawler motor thru an RC4WD 4:1 unit, running a 16T pinion (the smallest I could get and still get it to mesh with the 81 tooth spur on the Associated M4 tranny) and TXT axles with 40 series Moabs. By running the bigger 87 tooth aluminum spur, I'm hoping to be able to step down to a 14 tooth pinion. I think this combo will work okay for crawling... if it will survive with the 11lb rig on 40 Moabs.

If this drivetrain doesn't survive long, then I'm going to build my own tranny. I have a lathe so I can make my own gear shafts. My plan would be to order brass or steel gears and use set screws to secure them to "D" shafts. I'm wondering if anybody has any suggestions as to a possible good combo of gears or gear ratios that I should strive for with this tranny with an 11lb rig on 40 series tires and TXT axles? Of course, if I do this, I shall take copious notes and pics along the way.

Is that why it was glitching yesterday too?

Must've been because it was running fine when I removed the GRU to test just the motor. It was fast enough to do donuts in the backyard. Had it drifting around corners lifting the inside front tire.

Wow! Nice pics Gabe.. really good Macro. The video clip isn't working though.

Tried several different tranny combos and it's still geared too high. I even tried the 4:1 unit thru the R2 tranny and it still hauls butt but won't climb a wall. Guess I'm gonna end up making my own tranny.

What about a GD600 on the R2? It looks like you'd have enough room.

With most supers you look for a 60:1 ratio with an outrunner motor. with the 30:1 R2 and 2:1 axles you are there.....maybe its the crawler motor system....unsure.
